1. INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this calculation note is to present the design of Segmental cross arm at Concourse
level At Grid ‘H’ supporting standard I-girders with 18m grid on both sides of cross arm for Bangalore
Metro Rail Project in the city of Bangalore. This design is valid for Stations mentioned in drawing no.
BANG-R5-DTD-STA-STR-DWG-27001.

3. GENERAL HYPOTHESES
3.1 Design Basis
The design of the Segmental cross arm at platform level is carried out in accordance with the
following documents:

 DESIGN BASIS REPORT VIADUCT – Document no. BANG-R5-GEN-VIA-STR-REP-25001, it


summarizes the general assumptions for the whole project.
 IRS Concrete Bridge Code.
 BS: 5400 Code Of Practice For Design Of Concrete Bridges: Part-4-1990
 French Code for Pre-stressed Concrete: BPEL 91

The following software are used:


 ST1 Software for Analysis
 OASYS software for ultimate moment check.

3.2 Materials Parameters


3.2.1 Concrete Characteristics

 Characteristic Concrete Strength: fck = 50 MPa (on cubic) = 40 MPa (on cylinder)
(As per Euro code EN 1992-1-1:2004, Table 3.1)
 Young’s Modulus of concrete: Ec =34000 MPa
 Poisson’s Ratio of concrete:  = 0.15

 Volumetric Weight:  = 2.55 t/m3

3.2.2 Reinforcement

 Grade of Reinforcement: fy = 500 MPa


 Young’s Modulus of Reinforcement: Es = 200000 MPa
 Concrete Cover: C = 40 mm

3.2.3 Prestressing

Prestressing steel will be conforming to IS: 14268, class 2 Low Relaxation uncoated stress relieved
strands with the following characteristics:
Nominal Area of Strand: As = 140 mm2
Nominal ultimate Stress: fpu = 1860 MPa
Maximum Jacking Stress: 0.750 fpu = 1395MPa
Maximum Jacking Load per Strand: 1395*140/1000 = 195.3 KN
Modulus of elasticity: Ep = 195000 MPa

OTHER ASSUMPTIONS:
Prestressing Used: 5*18T15 + 7*17T15 + 1*16T15
Anchorage set-in Le 6 mm
HDPE ducts used, with: - Friction (wobble) 0.002 m-1
- Friction (curvature) 0.17 rad-1

3.4 Loads and Loading Combinations


The following are the critical loads which are considered for the design of cross arm. These loads and
loading combinations are taken according to the DBR.

3.4.1 Dead Load

For the calculation of dead load, we take the density of concrete of 2.55 T/m 3

3.4.2 Summary of loads


1. Self-weight of Structure as per Drawing (pier, cross arm, beam, girder & slab etc.)
 Arear of rectangular girder = 0.493 m2
 Area of Tapered Girder = 0.47 m2
 Cross Girder is 850mm in height x 350mm thick

 Slab is 150mm thick
 Pier size is 2m in Transverse direction
 Cross arm self-weight directly taken from Auto cad

2. SIDL at concourse level = 5.6 KN/m2

Floor Finish = 3.6 KN/m2


Suspension Load = 1 KN/m2
Light partition wall load = 1 KN/m2
Total = 3.6+1+1 = 5.6 KN/m2

3. LL at concourse level = 5 KN/m2

4. LL At technical room & ASS Location (concourse Level) = 15 KN/m2


Between grid A& C /grid H & K

5. Wall Load Along Grid 5, Grid A & K at concourse level = 25 KN/m

6. Stair Case Load = Directly taken from Station Structural Design


Dead Load at Grid ‘H’ = 26.955 KN/m for 2.23m width
At middle support shown in drawing = 94.815 KN/m for 2.23m width
Step Column size taken = 450mm x 450mm x 3.36m height
Beam above step column = 400mm x 400mm x 2.23m length

Live Load at Grid ‘H’ = 17.031 KN/m for 2.23m width


At middle support shown in drawing = 61.835 KN/m for 2.23m width

7. There is another Wall load in between Grid ‘H’ & ‘J’ is 25KN/m but we it will distributed only
70% of load on cross arm at grid ‘H’ & rest will be at grid ‘J’. This detail is shown in structural
& architectural drawings.

4. LONGITUDINAL ANALYSIS
4.1 Principles of Modelling
For the longitudinal analysis, modeling is done using ST1 software as beam model. The exact Layout
of Pre-stressing and exact sequences of construction are considered. A view from ST1 Software is as
shown below.

4.2 Description of ST1 Software


ST1 is a Finite Elements Method programme. It takes into account the phenomena specified below:
 Actual construction stages: Time variations of both topology and loading.
 Effect of time on materials: Creep, Shrinkage of concrete and Pre-stressing losses
(instantaneous and long term losses)
Main Input Data:
 Material characteristics including time effects
 Geometry of the structure during the different stages of the erection
 Pre-stressing layout
 External loading
 Superimposed dead load
 Moving loads definition, if any
Main Output Data:
 Normal stress at top, bottom and centre fibres
 Forces
 Shear stress
 Displacement and reactions
 Envelopes of all these results

ST1 conventions are as follows:


MY = Bending Moment (t-m)
TZ = Shear Force (t)
N = Axial Force (t)
VZ = Stress at top fibre (t/m²)
WZ = Stress at bottom fibre (t/m²)
Normal stress > 0 = compressive stress (t/m²)
Normal stress < 0 = tensile stress (t/m²)

The input file of the ST1 model and the listing of all loads, overloads, combinations, envelopes, and
steps of construction used in the program with their descriptions are given in Appendix 1.

4.4 Construction Sequence

Critical Construction Phases

Phase: 1 Fixing & casting of cast-in-situ connection of cross arm at the top of pier &
Erection of side portion of cross arm one by one with the help of epoxy.

Phase: 2
: Cable tensioning of stage 1 (e.g. PT1 )

Phase: 3 : Erecting of concourse level I-Girder one by one.

Phase: 4
: Cable tensioning of stage 2 (e.g. PT2 )

Phase: 5 : Casting of cast-in- situ slab & cross girder.

Phase: 6 : Application of SIDL load, wall load & stair case load

4.4.1 Construction Phases modeled in ST1 Software

PHASE 1: It is assumed that the age of concrete at this stage is minimum 16 Days as assumed below.

- Casting, Lifting, Stacking at Casting Yards : 10 Days (Minimum)


- Transport, Erection, Fixing at the top of pier : 6 Days (Minimum)

By assuming that segments are joined as per construction sequence (minimum age of each segment is
16days)

At this phase only the self-weight of cross arm is activated(Refer ETAT 1– App. 1)

PHASE 2: It is assumed that the age of concrete at this stage is minimum 25 Days as explained
below.
- Preparing Reinforcement and PT Ducts, Casting Concrete in Hole : 2 Days (Minimum)

- Setting and Hardening of Concrete in Hole : 7 Days (Minimum)


(7 Days or 35 MPa Strength whichever later)

So age of concrete is: 16+9 = 25 Days.

Therefore cable tensioning of stage 1 (e.g. PT1) is done. (Refer ETAT 2 – App. 1):

Losses:- Jacking Force = 1395*140*158


= 30857.4 kN
Where,
Area of Strands = 140 mm2
Number of Strands = 158

After losses PT force is = 28605.7 kN


Therefore, Total Losses = (1 – (28605.7/30857.4))

OASYS file for Ultimate Moment Capacity

The ultimate moment capacity is checked by using the IRS-CBC guidelines. The section shape does
not match any standard section (e.g. rectangle, T-section etc), therefore the calculation of Ultimate
moment capacity is done by using OASYS Software.
According to IRS CBC, Section 16.4.3.1, the applied moment increased by 15%.i.e.ratio of (Applied
