1 Course Objectives:
Understanding the architectural development in different periods over centuries in history.
Understanding the design philosophy and trends in different periods by various great designers.
2 Prerequisites:
NIL
3 Student Learning Outcomes:
To understand the paradigm shift through various styles of architecture.
Course Contents / Syllabus:
4 Module I: Theory 10

Discuss the evolution and development in design process from past to present. Discuss the principles and Elements of design
followed in buildings in past and how the trend changed over the period as per demand.
5 Module II: Historical study 20

Purity of form with structural honesty obtained in different periods – Roman, Romanesque, Baroque etc. leading to modern
Architecture.Study of Neo-classical style and revivalism of the earlier architectural styles.
6 Module III: Modern Architecture 20

Belief in creation of “new” and “ideal” world through the fundamentals of true and original. Origin of geometry, nature,
simplicity, abstraction, non-objective, construction and technology available at those times. Equating technology and progress
with present functionalism and appropriateness.
Works of great masters – Frank Lloyd Wright, Le-Cobusier, Alvar Alto, Mies Vender, Louis Kahn, Louis Sullivan,
EdwinLutyen etc.
7 Module IV: Post Independence and Contemporary Architecture (1950 onwards) 20
Introduction to post independence development in India, Introduction to contemporary development in India and other parts of
world, various architectural theories, thinking, building materials and construction technology adopted in high rise structures,
architectural styles and urbanism.
8 Module V: Great Masters of the period 30

Works of the great masters of the period in India i.e.- Charles Chorrea, B.V. Doshi, Raj Rewal, AchyutKnvinde
