TITLE

- Fabrication

OBJECTIVES

1. Know basic workshop processes.

2. Read and interpret job drawing.
3. Identify, select and use various marking, measuring, holding, bending,
drilling and cutting tools & equipments.
4. Operate, control different machines and equipments.
5. Inspect the job for specified dimensions
6. Produce jobs as per specified dimensions.

INTRODUCTION AND THEORY

Metal fabrication is the building of metal structures by cutting, bending,

and assembling processes. It is a value added process that involves the
construction of machines and structures from various raw materials. A fab shop
will bid on a job, usually based on the engineering drawings, and if awarded the
contract will build the product. Large fab shops will employ a multitude of
value added processes in one plant or facility including welding, cutting,
forming and machining. These large fab shops offer additional value to their
customers by limiting the need for purchasing personnel to locate multiple
vendors for different services. Metal fabrication jobs usually start with shop
drawings including precise measurements then move to the fabrication stage
and finally to the installation of the final project. Fabrication shops are
employed by contractors, OEMs and VARs. Typical projects include loose
parts, structural frames for buildings and heavy equipment, and stairs and hand
railings for buildings.
WORK PROCEDURE

1. Prepare a metal sheet as follow

2. Mark all dimensions based on the working paper using the scriber.

3. Cut the metal sheet as follow shape by using the cutter.

4. Fold the metal sheet by using the manual folding machine as the follow.
There are two type of fold used in this product; full-folded and 90° angle.

5. Before drill, make sure to make a hole by using the centre punch. Then use
the hand drill to drill the holes for riveting process.

6. Joint between the two holes by using rivet to make shape as follow.

DISCUSSION

On the second week, the final product was succesfully finished. All work
done smoothly with no injury occur as everyone obey to all the precaution and
safety rules instruction. Problem just occured on cutting session by using the
cutter, there was a mistake in dimension but it can be solved by taking the
correct precaution steps.

The other problem occurred is the product was not perpendicular as

shown in the instruction due to the cutting process. When it’s time to rivet, I can
see the dissimilarity of the vertex of the metal sheet. This can be avoid by
cutting the metal sheet wisely. And after that use the file to get rid the sharp part
for finishing and safety.

CONCLUSION

At the end the product has been successfully finished according to the plan
although there is not accurate dimension on the part of the product.
