Ferdinando Carulli (Napoli 1770 - Parigi 1841) inizid
imponendosi poi all'attenzione dei suoi contemporanei
come didatta e virtuoso.
nere stima e notorieta,
Insieme ai suoi compatriot! Giuliani e Carcassi, e
agli spagnoli Sor e Aguado, Carulli é considerato oggi

PREFACE
Ferdinando Carulli (Naples 1770 - Paris 1841) com-
menced his musical studies in his native city, first the
cello, later selftaught, the guitar, At that time this
instrument was passing through a period of decline,
the darkest of its history perhaps, during which
tradition was lost and teachers and teaching methods
almost entirely lacking.
Carulli was one of the first and most successful
‘musicians to revive interest in the guitar as a solo
instrument, creating an oeuvre that included exer-
cises of the utmost simplicity as well as concertos. He
achieved acclaim both as a teacher and virtuoso and
in 1808, after a successful series of concerts, he settled
in Paris, where his qualities fostered respect and
fame.
‘Together with his compatriots Giuliani and Carcassi
and the Spaniards Sor and Aguado, Carulli today is
considered to be one of the great masters of the gui-
tar. Though a prolific composer, he left more than
300 works, among them pieces for two guitars which
stand out for their quatity, he was above all an ex-
ceptional teacher to which his studies and method
bear witness. Especially when he concentrates on
short and simple pieces such as the ones chosen for
this collection, his is work particularly valuable
Experience has shown that these are the most adapted
to giving the beginner an initial technical and musical
grounding. Here ease of execution makes concentra-
tion on probleme of touch and legato an easier matter.
Here, as in our preceding revisions, we have lavished
particular attention on fingering, metronome mar-
kings and expression as well as clarity in the writing
itself. Details of utmost importance in modern guitar
teaching methods where all possible help is given to
the young instrumentalist,
