like to hear players on
any team whine about
money. Especially when
they make more than any
of us will
see in two
lifetimes.
That’s
why when
NFL play-
ers hold
out, fans

more than
any other
athletes have a right to
demand they are fairly
compensated.
Football players are
some of the toughest, most
physical athletes in the
world. They’re subjected
to more physical abuse
than athletes in any other
sport. Yet football players
tend to have less financial
security than top-notch
athletes in other sports.
NFL contracts aren’t guar-
anteed like they are in the
NBA or MLB.
And when situations
arise like in Monday’s
preseason game between
the Browns and Giants, it
just affirms that belief.
New York Giants re-
ceiver Odell Beckham Jr.
caught a second-quarter
pass and was cut down le-
gally by Boddy-Calhoun.
Beckham took his time
getting to his feet and
walked off the field with a
sprained ankle. Beckham
is currently in the fourth
year of his rookie contract
that will pay him $1.8 mil-
lion this season. Beckham
has been a stalwart on the
Giants offense with over
1,300 yards and 10 touch-
downs in each of his first
three seasons.
No one can deny his
production, nor his at-
titude should he demand

The Perryville Lady Pirates have
high expectations for this season.
After finishing as district-runner-
up to Dexter in 2016 and returning
seven seniors this season, they have
aspirations to do more in 2017.
But Valle Catholic has already
been where the Lady Pirates want to
go. The 2016 Class 1A Runner-up
in the state tournament showed they
are a formidable power once again
this season.
The Lady Warriors defeated Per-
ryville in straight sets 25-23, 25-21
on Tuesday night at Perryville High
School in the Pirates opening match
of the season.
“They have a lot on their plates
and a lot on their minds right now,”
Perryville Coach Cindy Cissell said.
“They played hard, but they know
they didn’t play like they know they
can. They aren’t very happy with
their performance tonight.”
The bad feelings came right from
the start as Valle jumped out to a
quick 6-1 lead in the first set.
“I just don’t think their minds
were here,” Cissell said. “They
fought their way back in both sets.
We just didn’t have the energy we
needed to have tonight.”
But a missed serve by Valle and
an ace by Maci Hotop narrowed the
lead to 6-3. The Lady Pirates tied the
set at 7-7 after Camryn Baer ham-
mered home one of her seven kills
on the night, a total that led Per-

to Valle. Austin Dauster
complied 5 catches for
80 yards to go along with
17 tackles on the night to
compliment Wibbenmey-
er’s big play. But Rowland
understands that Valle is
a tough test for any team,
and this week he will get to
see exactly what his team
is made of.
“If we play to out true
potential I can’t we why we
can’t compete with Scott
City,” he said. “We just
have to prove it.”
