ECM Bench Calibration Base Harness

This document provides information for the electronic control module (ECM) bench
calibration base harness, Part Number 3163151. The base harness is used with the
appropriate bench calibration adapter harness (see Table 3) to calibrate an ECM without
installing it on the engine. This makes it possible to calibrate the ECM before shipping the
ECM to a location where electronic service tools are not available. The bench calibration
harnesses can also be used for troubleshooting the ECM. Table 1, 2, and 3 contain items
used for the ECM bench calibration procedure.

Some of the bench calibration adapter harnesses include ECM ROM boot capability, (see
Table 3). The ROM boot procedure is used when an ECM will not accept a calibration or
will not communicate with the electronic service tool after all other electronic
troubleshooting methods have been attempted. The ROM boot procedure resets the
software resident in the ECM and is similar to rebooting a personal computer. It is
necessary to calibrate the ECM after the ROM boot procedure.

Calibration Procedure

CAUTION
Make sure all of the connectors are
disconnected from the ECM and the toggle
switch of the ECM bench calibration
harness is in the OFF position before
making any connections. Damage to the
power supply or ECM can occur.

NOTE: Downloading a calibration with the

bench calibration harness will result in
several fault codes since the engine
harness is not connected to the ECM.
These faults codes will need to be cleared
once the ECM is installed on engine.

NOTE: Activation of the ECM boot switch

requires the ECM to be re-calibrated. Next

Refer to the ESDN manual or the online help

file in the electronic service tool software for
calibration procedures.

Install

Connect the appropriate engine bench

calibration adapter harness to the ECM.

Connect the 8-pin connector of the ECM

bench calibration base harness to the 8-pin
connector of the appropriate bench
calibration adapter harness.

Connect the 9-pin ECM bench calibration

base harness to an INLINE™ or INLINE™ II
adapter and connect the adapter to a
personal computer.

Connect the 3-pin connector of the ECM

bench calibration base harness to the 3-pin
connector of the power supply.

If the power supply is equipped with a

ground alligator clip, connect it to the body
of the ECM.

Connect the electrical power supply to a 120

VAC or 240 VAC electrical outlet using the Previous
appropriate power supply cord.

Remove

Disconnect the electrical power supply from

the electrical outlet.

If the power supply is equipped with a

ground alligator clip, disconnect it from the
ECM.

Disconnect the 3-pin connector of the ECM Previous

bench calibration base harness from the 3-
pin connector of the electrical power supply. Next

Disconnect the 9-pin connector for the ECM

bench calibration base harness from the
INLINE™ or INLINE™ II adapter and
disconnect the adapter from the personal
computer.

Disconnect the 8-pin connector of the ECM

Disconnect the bench calibration adapter

harness from the ECM.

Bench Calibration Adapter Harnesses with

ROM Boot Switch

NOTE: Use this feature only if the

personal computer can not communicate
with the ECM or the ECM will not accept
a calibration and all troubleshooting
steps have been completed.

With the keyswitch (2) in the OFF position,

press and hold the ROM boot switch (1).

Move the keyswitch to the ON position and

continue holding the ROM boot switch for Previous
five seconds.

Release the ROM boot switch and
recalibrate the ECM.
