POWER SUPPLY

Power supply is the hardware in the form of a box whose contents are cables to restore
power to the other hardware. This hardware is usually mounted at the rear (inside) the computer
case. Input power supply in the form of alternating current (AC) so that the power supply had to
change the AC voltage into DC (direct current). The amount of electricity that can be handled is
determined by its power supply and is calculated in units of Watts.

Power Supply serves as a supplier of electrical voltage directly to the components inside
the computer case. Power Supply also serves to convert AC into DC voltage, because the
computer hardware can only operate with a DC current.

1. Types of Power Supply

There are 2 types of Power supply, symmetrical power supply and a single power
supply. While besed of the shape of the power supply there are two forms of power supply
full-wave and half-wave.
a) Symmetrical full-wave power supply
Usually used to supply power to the power amplifier OCL type.
b) Single power supply full wave.
c) Half-wave power supply.
Used to power the LED light or cooling fan only.
d) Complete power supply with regulator

The more components rectifiers are used the better the quality the Power Supply :
1. Power Supply with 4 (four) Diodes, 4 (four) as the filter elco transformer rectifier and
use CT (Center Tag)
2. Power Supply with 4 (four) Diodes, 2 (duo) as a filter elco transformer rectifier and use
CT (Center Tag)
3. Power Supply with 4 (four) Diodes, 2 (two) as the filter elco grading and using
transformer CT (Center Tag)
4. Power Supply with 2 (two) Diodes, 2 (duo) as a filter elco transformer rectifier and use
nonCT (nonCenter Tag)

Power supply seen from the output voltage can be divided into several types :
1) Variable Power Supply
Power supply is a variable power supply that has an adjustable output voltage. In
general, a variable power supply output voltage can be adjusted from 1.5 volts to 12
volts. However, for special purposes such as power supply that we often use in
laboratory power supply in general can be set from 0 volts to 33 volts.

2) Fixed Voltage Power Supply

Power supply voltage remains a power supply with a voltage output that can not be
regulated. One example of a fixed voltage power suppply is HP charger. At HP
charger output voltage of the power supply permanently at a certain voltage, for
example 5 volts.

3) Symmetrical Power Supply

Power supply is symmetrical power supply with dual output voltage is within a
voltage output power supply has a positive (+) and negative (-) and ground. Power
supply of this type can we meet in laboraorium electronics or the power electronics
devices such as power amplifiers.

Power supply symmetrically divided into two types, namely the output voltage
can be set as the power supply laboratory. And symmetrical power supply with fixed
voltage as the power supply of a large power amplifier power.

Based on its power supply system can be divided into two types: a step-down power
supply and power supply switching :
a) Power Supply stepdown
Power supply stepdown is also often referred to as a conventional power supply.
Power supply of this type using a stepdown transformer voltage reducer. In the power
supply of this type of power supply consists of several main parts as follows:

 Lowering voltage, in the form transformerstepdown which serves to lower the

commercial AC voltage (220 volts) into AC voltage (4.5 to 70 volts).
 A wave of the hand, this section serves to change tengangan AC into DC voltage.
The components used are diodes, either in the form of a full wave rectifier and a
half wave rectifier.
 Filter, serves to flatten the wave by diode rectification process in order to obtain a
stable DC voltage and without ripple.
 Voltage Regulator, serves to regulate the output voltage of the power supply,
there is a variable voltage regulator and fixed voltage regulator.

b) Switching Power Supply

Switching power supply is a power supply system rectify the commercial AC voltage
is directly converted into AC and then back to the next higher frequencies in the
lower voltage and rectified. The purpose of this switching power supply is to obtain
the maximum energy efficiency. With this power supply switching power supply can
be reproduced with a large current capacity and the physical form of a smaller and
lighter. Power supply to the computer is just one example of the application of
switching power supply system.

2. Application of Power Supply

Switching power supply circuit in principle works by rectify the AC voltage of 220
volts directly using a bridge diode D1 and smoothed using a filter capacitor C1. Then the
DC voltage used to form the PWM regulator system with power regulator transistor Q1
used for controll the transformer. Output voltage transformer in the form of high frequency
AC premises so that sufficient voltage rectification process using a half wave rectifier
system and with filter capacitor with a capacitance value is small.
Advantages of switching power supply circuit with the physical construction is
smaller and lighter power supply can be reproduced with large current capacity and output
voltage stability better than the power supply circuit with stepdown transformer.
