TREATMENT

1. INTRODUCTION

This work covered under this specification consist of providing and laying ‘cement based
water proofing treatment’ to horizontal and vertical surfaces of various components like
underground trenches, lift well, roof terraces, water tank etc. of the building.

This specification also covers the guarantee to be given by the executing agency for leak
proof-ness of the treatment for a period of ten years.

2. APPLICABLE CODES & SPECIFICATIONS

The relevant IS specifications, standards and codes given below are made a part
of this specification. All standards, specifications, code of practices referred to
herein shall be the latest edition including all applicable amendments, revisions
and additional publications.

2.1 List of Standards:

IS: 1200 (Part-IX) : Method of measurement of building and civil Engineering works.

IS: 2645 : Specification for integral cement water proofing compound.

IS: 702 : 1988 Specifications for Industrial bitumen


IS: 1322 : 1993 Bitumen Felts for Waterproofing and Damp Proofing.
IS: 3384 : 1986 Specifications for Bitumen primer for use in waterproofing and
Damp-proofing (first Revision)

3. GENERAL

The work of water proofing treatment shall be executed through a specialized agency having
sufficient experience in the field of all types of cement based water proofing works.

General Contractor shall submit the detailed specifications and the agency to be appointed for
water proofing works for approval of the Engineer-In-charge before commencement of work.

General Contractor shall provide at site a competent supervisor who should be able to advise
the requirements of the lean concrete base course for horizontal water proofing.

He shall also bring to the notice of the Engineer-In-charge the protective measures required
for the protection of the water proofing for subsequent operations over it.

The performance guarantee bond for all the water proofing works carried out by the water
proofing agency will be required to be furnished by them through the General Contractor.

In addition to the above the General Contractor also shall have to submit the performance
guarantee bond in the prescribed format for water proofing guarantee.

4. CEMENT BASED WATER PROOFING TREATMENT OVER THE TERRACE

Water proofing treatment shall be as specified in the schedule of items. The concrete
surfaces should be cleaned of all unwanted materials and the same shall be made rough.

The construction joints or cracks if any should be inspected and if found necessary “Damp
proof” compound with cement solution as per manufacturer’s specifications shall be injected
to seal off the honey-combs and cavities in the slab.

The same shall then be subjected to terrace method of water proofing treatment as per
manufacturer’s specifications.

The cleaned terrace shall be watered properly and cement slurry shall be laid to provide
necessary gradient for easy flow of rain water.

The coba shall be laid in a special manner with brick bats partly or specified in Architectural
finishes. Brick bat coba shall be of average thickness of 110 mm or as specified in the
Architectural drawings or as directed by the Engineer-In-charge.

The brick joints shall be filled in with “Damp Proof” jointless water proof plaster finished
smooth with trowel in thin layer of cement and marked false into 300 mm x 300 mm squares
or left smooth if directed by the Engineer-In-charge.

This treatment shall be continued along the inner sides of parapets or adjoining walls up to a
height of 300 mm to 375 mm in the shape of round vata as shown in the Architectural
drawings.

The construction joints shall be taken at ridges and should be made properly watertight and
monolithic.
Care shall be taken to finish the rain water inlets etc. properly so that no leakage occurs.

The terrace shall be tested for leak tightness (water pond test) after the treatment is
completed and any defects shall be made good.

5. CEMENT BASED WATER PROOFING TREATMENT TO ABOVE GROUND / OVERHEAD


WATER TANK

The tank is to be treated from inside as per ‘Injection’ and ‘Surface’ methods which includes
the plaster finished smooth with trowel.

Injection to be given to the floor and walls as and when found necessary and thereafter a
layer of ‘Cetroof’ water proofing will be laid on the floor and will be conformed along the side
and partition walls to their full height.

The thickness of the treatment on the floor will be about 50 mm and on the wall about 20 mm.

After the treatment is completed the tank shall be filled with water and the water retained for
24 hours. If any leakage is observed the General Contractor shall rectify the defects and the
tank shall be retested for leak tightness.

6. CEMENT BASED WATER PROOFING TREATMENT TO THE BASEMENT

The water proofing treatment for underground trenches, walls, raft, lift pit, water tank etc. shall
be done of basement type (Box Type).

The PCC surface below raft shall be thoroughly cleaned and a layer of water proofing
treatment about 75 mm thick shall be laid.

The RCC raft shall then be cast over these surfaces. The side walls shall be cast
afterwards and the water proofing treatment shall be continued on these walls up to the
required heights.

The thickness of treatment for vertical surfaces shall be 40 mm to 50 mm.

Supply, deliver and fix approved make 230mm PVC water-stop including butt welding of
joints, holding clips with minimum 10 years warranty to basement wall along the construction
joints at various levels.

Provide pressurized injection grouting with neat cement slurry 1:3 (1 Cement : 3 Water) and
mixed with CICO nonshrink polymeric grout or approved equivalent. The grouting compound
mixed at the rate of 0.5% weight of cement shall be applied to the surface of base slab of
underground tank and vertical RCC wall. Cement grouting shall be injected at a pressure
between 2.52 to 7.5Kg/cm2 by hand operated pumps.

Waterprofing system to underground structures , water tank, sump etc as per manufacturers
specification Providing & applying to external concrete surface 3 coats of Shalimastic EHD @
0.250 kg/sq.m. per coat along with one coat of Shalijet primer & Euco plaster mix & Shalipoxy
PB a polysulphide & epoxy based coating all complete of STP or other approved make sytem
as per Owner / consultant..

7. WATER PROOFING TREATMENT IN SUNKEN FLOORS OF TOILET AND BATH ROOM

The work shall be carried out by the approved specialized waterproofing agency
who has experience in the proposed waterproofing system.

Shop drawing shall be submitted for review before executing the treatment with all relevant
details of rain water down take pipes, flashing, coving, ridge, valley, drip moulds, etc.

The main civil contractor shall submit in writing the quality assurance statement of their
responsibilities of the treatment before commencing the work and confirming acceptance of
these specifications and approved water proofing vendor.

The main civil contractor has to take responsibility for waterproofing all areas which have
service lines puncturing through the roof, walls etc., including cables, pipes, ducts, trays etc.,
which are installed by other contractors at all potential areas of water ingress into the building
including through vertical surfaces of the structure except at structural glazing areas which is
not in the scope of the main civil contractor.

If cracks are found on the concreted surfaces and water ingress into the structure takes place
or if the quality of finished work is found to be of unacceptable standard, the same will be

rejected by the Engineer in Charge without any liability whatsoever and no payment will be
made for the entire waterproofing system and same will have to be rectified free of cost by
the main civil contractor using an alternative approved method by the Engineering in Charge.

All services requirements for the successful treatment needs to be identified and the
clearance for the same shall be the responsibility of the main civil contractor.

The specification give in the section are generic in nature. The main civil contractor has to
study and submit his final proposal for review which includes detailed specifications, method
statement and shop drawings.

All pre-works like grooves, electrical/Gl piping conduit should be completed before starting
the waterproofing Process.

7.1 Site Requirements

Recommended System: Brushbond TGP or approved equivalent crystalline capillary


waterproofing system at 1.5kg/sqmt for cementitious substrates followed by application of one
coat of acrylic polymer based cementitious coating like Brushbond RFX or approved
equivalent.

8. TOILET WATER PROOFING TREATMENT:

8.1 PRIMARY TREATMENT

On completion of curing and all pre-works stated above, the surface shall be cleaned
thoroughly and any mortar droppings, debris etc., mechanically abraded with carborandum
stone, wire brush and washed with plenty of water. The surface shall be free from dust, dirt
and foreign materials before starting the treatment.

Before starting the grouting process, a 100mm depth water ponding for 10 days shall be
carried out after plugging the trap hole to identify any loose pockets which have potential for
leakage and create water ingress in the floor slab.

All construction joints, honey combed concrete, leakage/damp areas in the slab shall be
treated with pressure grouting using cement slurry mixed with CEBEX 100 or an approved
equivalent grout admixture as per manufacturer’s recommendations. The pressure grouting

shall be done through sockets to fill the pores in the concrete at construction joints, vertical
surfaces, columns and wherever leakages are expected during cleaning/water ponding of the
surface. The junction of vertical and horizontal surface shall have the cants at 45° using NITO
BOND SBR or approved equivalent with CM 1:3.

All water supply and sanitary lines in the toilets shall be sealed with WINSIL 20/Hydroswell
HDP silicone sealant or an approved silicone sealant all-round the pipes including grouting
with cement slurry mixed with CEBEX 100 or approved equivalent.

After the above said steps of primary treatment, the slab surface shall be applied with primer
coat consisting of cement slurry admixed with CEBEX 100 or an approved equivalent grout
admixture at the rate of 225 gms/100ml per bag of cement. The primer coat shall be neatly
filled to seal all voids, pores, undulations in the surface to make the surface water tight.

8.2 SECONDARY TREATMENT

After completion of the primary treatment a layer of Brushbond TGP or an approved


equivalent shall be applied at 1.5Kg/sq.mt to RCC surface. Treated surface of coating shall be
kept moist by fog spraying 3 to 4 times daily for the period of 48 hours after application of
Brushbond TGP or an approved equivalent.

Apply one coat of Brushbond RFX or an approved equivalent after minimum


48 hours of application of Brushbond TGP or an approved equivalent.

Sprinkle fine aggregate immediately after the application of Brushbond RFX or an approved
equivalent coat to get the mechanical key for the protective plaster. Cure the system for
minimum 3 days as per normal curing practice.

On completion of curing process, a layer of CM 1:4, 20 to 25 mm thick water proofing plaster


admixture with CONPLAST X421IC or an approved equivalent integral waterproofing
compound at a rate as specified by the manufacturer shall be carried out in 2 layers. Broken
jelly may be placed on the 1st coat of plaster for 2nd coat plaster work. The necessary slopes
from entrance door towards water escape pipe shall be made in accordance to the site
requirement. The waterproofing treatment shall be carried out on all side walls up to 450 mm
above toilet finished floor level and all beam tops, junction etc.

The treated surface shall be flooded with water up to slab drop for a minimum period of 4
days for curing cum testing purposes. After 4 days, get the same shall be checked and
certified before proceeding for further activity. During this period, leakage, dampness etc.,
shall be observed and if any defects found shall be arrested immediately before starting
further activities.

8.3 FILLING OF TOILET SUNKEN PORTION

Case 1: If the depth of sinking is more than 50mm the same shall be made up by using
well burnt selected brick bats free from over and under burnt brick bats. The brick basts shall
be laid to the require slope. Admixture with CONPLAST X421IC or an approved integral
waterproofing compound including the gap between the brick bats shall also be grouted with
the same mortar. A layer of 50mm thick

M20 screed concrete to required level and gradient admixture with CONPLAST X421IC or an
approved integral waterproofing compound shall be carried out before tiling layer is taken up.

Case 2: If the depth of sinking is less than 50mm, it shall be made up by 50mm thick
M20 screed concrete to the required level and gradient admixture with Conplast X421IC or an
approved integral waterproofing compound before tiling layer is taken up. The necessary
curing shall be taken up for a minimum period of 7 days.

9. MODE OF MEASUREMENTS

The measurement shall be for the actual area covered by the treatment.

The length and breadth shall be measured along the walls before the treatment is laid.

The height of vata shall be considered for measurement after deduction of the average
thickness of the treatment laid horizontally over the terrace. The areas of all openings, cutouts
etc. shall be deducted.
