BOD5 =?
BODu =?
The Solution
7.6 mg/L – 4.3 mg/L = 3.3 mg/L
A city discharges 100 million liters per day of domestic sewage into a
stream whose typical rate of flow is 250 m3 per second.
The velocity of the stream is approximately 3 km per hour. The
temperature of the sewage is 30oC, while that of the stream is 15oC.
The 20oC BOD5 of the sewage is 180 mg/L, while that of the stream is
1.0 mg/L.
The sewage contains no DO, but the stream is 90% saturated
upstream of the discharge. Assume saturation level of DO as 10 mg/L.
At 20oC, de-oxygenating coefficient is estimated to be 0.34 per day
while re-aeration coefficient is 0.65 per day.
1. Determine DO level at the critical point and its location.
2. If DO level at the critical point is less than 4 mg/L, what should
be allowable BOD5 of the wastewater.
