Abstract
This course introduces you to Construction Document Management with BIM 360. BIM 360 is a connected
BIM platform for collaboration, communication, construction documentation, and project management,
and a significant number of construction professionals are using BIM 360 tools. This course is designed for
students majoring in AE (Architectural Engineering), CM (Construction Management) or CE (Civil
Engineering) who will be active members of construction projects in the future where they would benefit
from the use of connected BIM.
The materials for this course have been designed for inclusion in introductory undergraduate level course,
such as Introduction to BIM, Plan Reading or Graphic Communication. This document will show you how to
set up this course for your students.

1. Introduction to course and how to use this document
This course introduces you to Construction Document Management with BIM 360. BIM 360 construction
management software enables almost anytime, anywhere access to project data throughout the building
construction lifecycle. The Autodesk® BIM 360™ platform provides a smarter way to connect teams through
cloud-based services to manage and share project data to accelerate project delivery.
Benefits include:
Today’s construction professionals need to know how to gain access to the right information at the right
time in order to enhance team collaboration, minimize mistakes and rework, and increase project
profitability. It is important for you to know how to integrate cloud-based technologies into the workflow
to collaborate more effectively with your team members.
• Explain the basic functions and purpose of BIM 360 Docs and Glue
• Identify the benefits of connected BIM and cloud-based collaboration for a project team.
• Run clash detection tests and analyze results using BIM 360 Glue
• Create and resolve markups through to resolution
• Integrate learned skills related to BIM 360 platforms into future coursework throughout your
academic career
The rest of this document will show you how to set up new BIM 360 projects for your students to begin this
course.
As BIM 360 is being used as a collaborative work platform in the real world, your students can use BIM 360
to work with student team members or communicate with instructors. You will learn how to use BIM 360
Docs as a homework assignment submission platform.

2. Introduction to BIM 360 Services
BIM 360™ construction management software enables almost anytime, anywhere access to project
data throughout the building construction lifecycle. This course will focus on BIM 360 Docs and BIM
360 Glue.
BIM 360 Docs
BIM 360™ Docs web service ensures the entire project team is building from the correct version of
documents, plans, and models. Main features and benefits include the ability to connect your
entire team, control access, built for construction, collaborative viewing and markups, and the
ability to coordinate work in progress and access to all files, anywhere.

Please watch BIM 360 Glue overview video here: BIM 360 Glue overview video
BIM 360 account administrators can add, customize, and edit projects for use across BIM 360 web services.
In addition, account administrators can create projects and assign project administrators who grant their
4|Page
project members access to models and data. An account administrator is typically an employee (such as the
IT manager) of the general contractor or owner organization. In an academic environment, course
instructors would serve as BIM 360 account administrators.
By contrast, BIM 360 project administrators can invite, edit, and remove project members. Project creation
and setup tasks are for account administrators only. After an account administrator creates a project, a
project administrator can assign project members and invite them to activate their accounts. In an
academic environment, student team captains would serve as BIM 360 project administrators.
The rest of this document will show you how to manage high level Administration workflows as listed
below:
Below is a high level checklist of the main tasks that Account Administrators must perform before use of
BIM 360. Step numbers listed below refer to this document.

5. BIM 360 Docs Project Administration
This section will discuss the key tasks of BIM 360 Docs for project administrators.
Activate projects
Step 1 Complete project activation by opening one of the welcome emails for the BIM 360
services associated with the project and click the Activate your membership
button in the message.
Note: This step is very important. This ensures that team members assigned to the
project can access it without issue.
22 | P a g e
Create folders and subfolders
Every project starts with pre-configured folders to support a specific process or data type. These top-
level folders are called Plans and Project Files. You can add subfolders to these folders.
Step 2 Open Autodesk BIM 360 welcome email to the BIM 360 Docs project
Note: Check email junk folder in case message was filtered from inbox.
Each welcome email is meant for only one person. Do not forward it to others.
Default folders are Plans and Project Files (mark 1). These folder names cannot be
changed.
23 | P a g e
Step 4 Select the parent folder you want to add subfolders to
• Click the ellipse button across from folder name (Plans or Project Files)
• Click Add Subfolder
• Enter name of subfolder and hit Enter key
Note: Plans folder is used only for hosting design files and PDF documents. Use Plans
to manage, publish, and review the latest set of construction documents, in both 2D
and 3D formats.
Note: Use Project Files for any project document, including design data and all other
document types.
24 | P a g e
Assign permissions to folders
Manage folder permissions
Restrict user access to certain folders, or limit access according to user role or company.
Subfolders automatically inherit the permission level of the parent folder, but can be changed later. If
changed, sub-folder permissions must match the access level of the parent folder, or else have a greater
(less restricted) access level of the parent folder.
Permission levels
Upload - only User/role/company may share their own documents in that folder
with other team members.
View - only User/role/company may view documents and add markups or
issues, but cannot upload documents.
View + Upload User/role/company may share their own documents with team
members and view any other documents in that folder.
View + Upload + Edit User/role/company may share their own documents with team
members and view and edit any other documents in that folder.
View + Upload + Edit + Control User/role/company may share their own documents with team
members and view and edit any other documents in that folder. As
part of the Controller (control) role they can also carry out tasks
within that folder that are usually restricted to the Project Admin.
This includes creating title blocks, adding project members and
managing permissions. This permission level offers the greatest
access to folders.
25 | P a g e
Step 6 Add permissions
• In the text field, type in person, Role or Company name (mark 1)
• Click Add to add to the list (mark 2)
• Select role, company, or individual name and assign permission level
(mark 3)
