Connectors.

Aim:
To identify the front panel indicators and switches and rear side connector in a
computer system.
Procedure:
Tower Case:

Hard Drive Activity LED:

LED provides visual indication that data is being read from or written to the
hard drive.

Reset Switch:
Supporting the reset function requires, a momentary-contact switch that is
normally open. When the switch is closed, the board resets and runs POST.

Drive bays:
Drive bays are most commonly used to store disk drives, although they can
also be used for front-end USB ports, I/O bays, card readers, fans, tool storage,
and other uses.
 5.25" - Full-height bays were found in old PCs in the early to mid-1980s.
They were approximately 3.5" high by 5.75" wide, and used mainly for hard
disks and floppy disk drives. Half-height drive bays are approximately 1.75"
high by 5.75" wide, and are the standard housing for CD and DVD drives in
modern computers.
 3.5" - 3.5" bays, their actual dimensions are 4" wide by 1" high. Those with
an opening in the front of the case are generally used for floppy or Zip drives

Front Side Connectors:

USB Connectors:
 USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a way of setting up communication between a
computer and peripheral devices. USB is intended to replace many varieties
of serial and parallel ports. USB can connect computer peripherals such as
mice, keyboards, PDAs, gamepads and joysticks, scanners, digital cameras,
printers, personal media players, flash drives, and external hard drives.

3
[examkey.wordpress.com]

Card Reader:
 Card reader" is used to reads flash memory cards. It can be a standalone
device that connects to a computer via USB or it may be integrated into a
computer, printer, or multifunction device
 Most card readers accept multiple memory card formats, including compact
flash (CF), secure digital (SD), and Sony's Memory Stick.
Audio Jack:
 A socket for plugging in an audio source, Audio jacks are found on many
types of audio equipment and musical instruments that accept external
sound sources.
Rear Side Connectors:

4
[examkey.wordpress.com]

PS/2 Port:
 The PS/2 standard, introduced by IBM in 1987, stands for Personal
System/2. A PS/2 port is an electronic receptacle or plug found on
computers. It accepts a PS/2 cable with a mini-DIN connector, and is most
often used to plug in a keyboard or mouse.
 The connector is small with a diameter of about 1/3 inch (9.5mm). It
features a metal sleeve that is notched to ensure proper alignment when
inserting it into the PS/2 port. This protects the circular pins inside the DIN
connector from becoming bent.
Parallel Port:
 This interface is found on the back of older PCs and is used for connecting
external devices such as printers or a scanner. It uses a 25-pin connector
(DB-25). The latest parallel port standard, which supports the same
connectors, is called the Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP).
Serial Port:
 The serial port is used for peripherals such as mice, gaming controllers,
modems, and older printers. It is sometimes called a COM port or an RS-232 port.

SMPS, Motherboard, FDD, HDD, CD, DVD and add on cards.
Aim:
To familiarize a computer system layout and mark the positions of SMPS,
Motherboard, FDD, HDD, CD / DVD drive and add on cards.
Procedure:
Motherboard:
The motherboard has been an integral part of most personal computers. The
motherboard is a common circuit board. Each circuit card performs a unique
function in the computer and gets its power from the socket.

CPU:
The CPU, or processor, is the heart of your computer no matter what type
(PC, Server, and Laptop). There are many brands for processors such as Intel and
Athlon all with different processors for your computer.

7
[examkey.wordpress.com]

RAM:
Random Access Memory (RAM) is the form of memory contained in most
computers. When an application is running it stores its information in the RAM.
When you close the application the information is deleted from the RAM.

Hard-Disk Drive:
A hard drive stores all your files and information in a permanent form unlike
storing it in RAM (which is temporary). The larger your hard disk (drive) the more
information and files you're able to store.
`

8
[examkey.wordpress.com]

CD-Rom:
The CD-Rom is reads CD's. CD-Rom completely stands for Compact Disk
Read Only Memory. CD's have much more data than a floppy disk. Using CD-RW
you can make your own CD's and use them more like a floppy disk.

CD-Rom: CD-disk

IDE cable : SATA cable

DVD-Rom:
DVD-ROM is a digital optical disc storage format. DVDs offer higher storage
capacity than compact discs while having the same dimensions. Blank recordable
DVD discs (DVD-R and DVD+R) can be recorded once, Rewritable DVDs (DVD-RW,
DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM) can be recorded and erased multiple times.

Floppy Drive:
A floppy drive reads the popular floppy disk. Floppy disk is easy to use,
rewritable, compact, and great for storing information. The floppy drive is simple
and allows you to read, write to, and write over information stored on a floppy disk.

9
[examkey.wordpress.com]

Power Supply:
The power supply is usually a small metal box in the top corner of a case (tower).
You can see the power supply as below diagrams.

Access Slots:
Access slots or expansion slots are openings in a computer where a
circuit board can be inserted to add new capabilities to the computer. Examples of
drives that may go here would be modems; USB drives, networking cards, video
adapters, and sound cards.

the corresponding slots. the
motherboard should have rows of
slots that have 2 or 3 sections that
are different lengths. Make sure the
pins on the RAM cards line up with
the pins on the motherboard
connector. Don't get the RAM slots
mixed up with PCI slots. The PCI slots are usually wider.

 Open the case and mount the power

supply which is M-ATX type. Make
sure to connect all the connections to
the drives and the motherboard.

 Attach the Mainboard back plate to

the case and check the Mainboard
mounting positions. The

modern graphics cards use PCI-E.
Some will require you to remove two
of the protective plates as opposed to
just one. You may have to punch the
plates out of the case.

 Insert the graphics card. You may have to bend a tab on the slot to allow the
graphics card to be inserted. The tab will help lock the graphics card in place
(this is more important for bulkier, high-end cards). Apply light, even force
until the card is seated uniformly, and the back panel lines up.
49
[examkey.wordpress.com]

 Secure the card. Once you have inserted the card, use a screw to secure it to
the back panel of the case. If you don’t secure your card, you could end up
damaging it in the long run.
 Install any other PCI cards. If you have any other PCI cards that you are add,
such as a dedicated sound card, the installation process is the same as the
video card process.
 Finally, Close the cabinet case.

Select a compatible operating system and to install.

Ex.No.7. Install and Configure Dual OS Installation

Aim:
To Install and Configure a Dual OS installation in a computer system.
Procedure:

Ensure that your computer meets or exceeds the minimum system

requirements to run Windows XP and Redhat Linux:
 300 MHz Intel or AMD CPU
 128 Megabytes of system RAM (It can work with 64 Megabytes of RAM but
it’s not recommended)
 1.5 Gigabytes of available drive space
 Super VGA 800x600 Display Adapter
 CD or DVD-ROM
 Keyboard and mouse, or other pointing devices
 Network Interface Adapter required for Internet and Network Connectivity
 Ensure you have a Windows XP Product Key. It is printed on a sticker on
your software package. It is a string of 5 groups of characters (each 5 long),
separated by dashes, resulting in 25 characters in all.
 It looks like this: HHHCF-WCF9P-M3YCC-RXDXH-FC3C6.
 When the software has almost finished installing, you will be asked for it. You
need the product key to complete installing Windows.

 Before inserting the CD, you'll have to enter bios (in most cases by
pressing DEL on system startup) and select your primary boot device
CD-ROM Insert the Windows XP Installation Disc and start your computer.
When prompted to "Press any key to boot from CD," press a key on the
keyboard.

52
[examkey.wordpress.com]

 The installation program will check your hardware, install default-set

drivers, and load files necessary for installation. When arriving at the
"Welcome to Setup" screen, Press ENTER to begin the installation process.

 Read the License Agreement and press F8 indicating you agree to its terms.

53
[examkey.wordpress.com]

 On the next screen, you are presented with a summary of the available
partitions on your installed hard drives. At this point, you should see only
one entry, "Unpartitioned Space." It will be highlighted in grey. Press C on your
keyboard to begin creating partitions for the drive.

 Enter the size in megabytes for the new partition

54
[examkey.wordpress.com]

 The system will create your new partition, and you will now be at the partition
summary screen once again. Select your new partition, usually labeled "C:
Partition 1 [Raw]" and press ENTER.

 Select either "Format the Partition using the NTFS File System" OR "Format the
Partition using the FAT File System," and press ENTER.
 It is highly recommended to avoid Quick Format, as this skips an important
process that checks the hard drive for errors or bad sectors.

55
[examkey.wordpress.com]

 The system will now format the partition.

 Windows will now start copying files from the installation disc and prompt you to
reboot the computer when the process is completed.

 This is the most time consuming part. When the computer reboots, do not
press enter to boot from the disc this time, rather allow the computer to boot
56
[examkey.wordpress.com]

from the hard drive. If you are greeted with the Windows XP Boot screen, all is
well so far.

 Now the setup program will display various marketing information to you as it
installs and configures itself to your system.
 Sooner or later, a dialog window will appear, asking you to choose your Regional
settings. Select appropriate settings native to your area. Click the "Next" button
when that is completed.

Enter your Product Key, (otherwise known as a CD or Install Key,) at this window.
You will not be able to complete this process without a valid Key. Click "Next" to
continue.

57
[examkey.wordpress.com]

 If your computer is going to be on a LAN (Local Area Network) at home, or

even just for kicks, give it a name.

 Select your time zone, and ensure that the date/time are correct. Click
"Next" to continue.

58
[examkey.wordpress.com]

 Leave "Typical Settings" selected for Network Setup, unless you have a
specialized access device or protocol required

 Setup will continue to install other devices and peripherals connected to your
machine, give you marketing and capability information, then reboot as before

59
[examkey.wordpress.com]

 Congratulations! You've installed Windows XP. There are a few more additional
set-up routines required, but you have completed the installation. Remove the
CD from the drive.

 Upon Reboot, click yes when you are informed Windows will be changing your
visual settings to improve quality.

You will now be looking at the default Windows XP Desktop. Congratulations!

Ex.No.8: TO Assembling and Disassembling of Laptop to identify the parts and to

install OS and configure it.
Aim:
To configure Assembling and Disassembling of Laptop to identify the parts and to install
OS and configure it.
Procedure:

Laptop assembly Guidelines

 There are several types of small screws that are used throughout the laptop. Place
these in small envelopes and write the component name on the envelope. Be organized
and keep track of all the screws.
 We have to figure out how to remove the back panel.

 The first component to install is the processor. Take extreme care not to touch the pins
in the socket during the process.

 For wireless connectivity, our system uses a Mini-

PCIe slot rather than the more common Mini-PCI

68
[examkey.wordpress.com]

variety. Be sure to connect the wires first before sliding the card into the slot.

 Most barebones notebooks use upgradable MXM graphics cards, which can be difficult to
find at stores but are easy to install. Gamers should go with the most powerful MXM
card available.
Pop in the video card:
To install the MXM graphics card, first find the baggie with three larger silver screws and
two small black screws. Hold the card at about a 30-degree angle as you insert its edge
connector into the video-card slot near the center of the motherboard. Press the card in and
downward, and then use the two small black screws to secure it in place.
Set up the drive:
The motherboard SATA connectors are along the front, right edge, under the lip of the
laptop's shell. Drop the drive into place and then carefully use your thumb to push the drive
into the SATA connectors. Now use the remaining two screws to secure the drive in place.
Add memory:
The last internal components to install are the SO-DIMM memory boards. The two
memory slots sit between the graphics card and the large silver finned heat sink, near the
center of the motherboard.

Final assembly:
Now that all the hardware components are installed, find the four screws you removed
from the ACE Door, slide the door back into place, and replace the screws. To prepare for
power up, pop in the notebook's battery pack, connect the power brick, and plug it into a
wall outlet. Finally, open the laptop's cover, cross your fingers on one hand, and use your
other hand to press the power button.

You will also need a mini Phillips screwdriver, anti-static wrist strap, magnifying glass, and
good lighting.

The WLAN Module is consistently located on the back of the laptop

The RTC Battery:

The RTC Battery (Real Time Clock) can be located in the memory module, hard drive,
WLAN, or any compartment in the back of the laptop. The HP dv4000 locates the RTC in the
Mini PCI compartment as shown below.

Switchboard and Keyboard Removal:

To access many laptop components the keyboard must be removed. Often, the
switchboard, keyboard cover, and other components must be removed to access the keyboard
connections and screws. The HP ze5300 is a good example below.

71
[examkey.wordpress.com]

CD/DVD Drive removal (Optical Drive):

Display Assembly Removal”

Removing the Display Assembly is one of the more intricate procedures when working
on a laptop. The HP dv2700 requires the removal of many components beginning with the
Wireless Antenna Cable located in the WLAN module compartment and also a screw
that secures the Display Assembly to the computer.
The Keyboard and Switch cover also need to be removed. Follow the illustrations
below to get an idea of the procedure.

systems

Procedure:

Configure Internet connection and use IPCONFIG, PING:

1. Open Command Prompt, and then type ipconfig. From the display of the ipconfig
command, ensure that the network adapter for the TCP/IP configuration you are testing
is not in a Media disconnected state.
2. At the command prompt, ping the loopback address by typing ping 127.0.0.1.
3. Ping the IP address of the computer.
4. Ping the IP address of the default gateway.
 If the ping command fails, verify that the default gateway IP address is correct
and that the gateway (router) is operational.
5. Ping the IP address of a remote host (a host that is on a different subnet).
If the ping command fails, verify that the remote host IP address is correct, that the
remote host is operational, and that all of the gateways (routers) between this computer
and the remote host are operational.
6. Ping the IP address of the DNS server.
If the ping command fails, verify that the DNS server IP address is correct, that the
DNS server is operational, and that all of the gateways (routers) between this computer
and the DNS server are operational.
Tracer and Net stat utilities to debug the network issues.

Tracer network:

 Open Command Prompt, and type the following:

 tracert host_name
84
[examkey.wordpress.com]

Or, type tracert ip_address

 where host_name or ip_address is the host name or IP address, respectively, of the
remote computer.
 For example, to trace a connection route from this computer to www.microsoft.com,
type the following at a command prompt:
tracert www.microsoft.com

 If you do not want the tracert command to resolve and display the names of all routers
in the path, use the -d parameter. This expedites the display of the path. For example,
to trace a path from this computer to www.microsoft.com without displaying the router
names, type the following at a command prompt:

Net stat utilities to debug the network issues:

Displays active TCP connections, ports on which the computer is listening, Ethernet
statistics, the IP routing table, IPv4 statistics (for the IP, ICMP, TCP, and UDP protocols), and
IPv6 statistics (for the IPv6, ICMPv6, TCP over IPv6, and UDP over IPv6 protocols). Used
without parameters, netstat displays active TCP connections.

Syntax

netstat [-a] [-e] [-n] [-o] [-p Protocol] [-r] [-s] [Interval]

Parameters

-a

Displays all active TCP connections and the TCP and UDP ports on which the computer is
listening.

-e

Displays Ethernet statistics, such as the number of bytes and packets sent and received. This
parameter can be combined with -s.

-n

85
[examkey.wordpress.com]

Displays active TCP connections, however, addresses and port numbers are
expressed numerically and no attempt is made to determine names.

-o

Displays active TCP connections and includes the process ID (PID) for each connection. You
can find the application based on the PID on the Processes tab in Windows Task Manager.
This parameter can be combined with -a, -n, and -p.

-p Protocol

Shows connections for the protocol specified by Protocol. In this case, the Protocol can be tcp,
udp, tcpv6, or udpv6. If this parameter is used with -s to display statistics by protocol,
Protocol can be tcp, udp, icmp, ip, tcpv6, udpv6, icmpv6, or ipv6.

-s

Displays statistics by protocol. By default, statistics are shown for the TCP, UDP, ICMP, and IP
protocols. If the IPv6 protocol for Windows XP is installed, statistics are shown for the TCP over
IPv6, UDP over IPv6, ICMPv6, and IPv6 protocols. The -p parameter can be used to specify a
set of protocols.

-r

Displays the contents of the IP routing table. This is equivalent to the route print command.

Interval

Redisplays the selected information every Interval seconds. Press CTRL+C to stop the
redisplay. If this parameter is omitted, netstat prints the selected information only once.

/?

Displays help at the command prompt.

Screen and click next.

15. Click Finish after the configuration process is completed.

Connecting the hardware and cables:

When setting up your network hardware and cables, keep the following in mind:

 All PCs must have networking hardware already installed. Examine the back of the PC
for an RJ45 port (it looks like a port for a typical phone but is wider with eight contacts).
 If you have more than two PCs, you will need at least one multi-port sharing device like
a hub, switch, or router with enough ports to support all your PCs.
 If you are only networking two PCs, all you need is one crossover cable. You do not need
a hub, switch, or router.
 Multi-port sharing devices that work for creating small networks:
 Hubs are usually the least expensive of the devices. Hubs simply repeat the data
flow out to the other lines. These work good in small networks.
 Switches are like hubs but filter IP addresses to increase data flow in larger
networks.
 Routers become necessary when networking over 254 computers. A router can
also be used to share one IP address with several other PCs (not discussed in this
document).
 The network link between PCs can only be as fast as the slowest device in the link. Try
to use all networking devices with the same speed rating for optimal performance (this
include cables).
 Try to keep hubs, switches, and routers accessible.
91
[examkey.wordpress.com]

 Some hubs, switches, and routers, require the last port be used only when the cascade
port is not already in use. Do not connect a network cable for a PC into the cascade port
unless you are "cascading" to another device.
