appeared!to!find!this!fun!and!different,!they!did!stop!what!they!were!doing,!looked!at!and!
listened!to!us.!We!practiced!this!after!our!introduction,!and!before!the!main!lesson!started.!I!
would!use!this!strategy!again!with!this!class.!

of!this!strategy,!for!the!minority,!they!may!not!have!understood!completely!due!to!the!

Showed!a!world!map!with!Nepal!and!Australia!highlighted.!Showed!a!map!of!Australia!and!
highlighted!where!Adelaide!is.!Australia!and!Adelaide!were!written!on!the!board,!students!

Students!had!to!write!their!name,!age,!where!they!live!and!information!about!themselves.!
Based!on!the!students’!abilities,!they!were!required!to!write!more,!and!more!detailed!
information!about!themselves.!As!students!did!this,!I!had!them!read!the!fact!about!
themselves!to!me.!The!writing!component!was!an!individual!activity!for!students.!!

board!(head,!shoulders,!knees,!toes,!eyes,!ears,!mouth,!nose).!Parts!read!together,!actions!
added!slowly!with!the!words.!Song!sang!by!teachers!as!an!example.!Song!sang!as!a!class!
slowly,!then!progressed!to!become!faster!and!faster.!!

Lesson!Reflections:!
Due!to!no!previous!knowledge!about!the!school,!teaching,!or!the!students!we!were!thrown!in!the!
deep!end,!and!conducted!successful!lessons!with!each!class.!Although!the!lessons!were!not!perfect,!
the!students!appeared!to!be!engaged!in!the!tasks,!and!willing!to!learn.!Class!1!appeared!excited!and!
did!not!follow!directions!very!well,!but!were!eager!to!complete!the!tasks.!Class!3A!and!3B!completed!
the!writing!tasks!very!quickly,!allowing!more!time!to!focus!on!the!song.!This!they!appeared!to!enjoy,!
and!all!engaged!in!by!attempting!to!sing!and!actions.!However,!not!all!students!successfully!
pronounced!the!words,!this!is!most!likely!due!to!English!being!their!second!language.!We!are!
planning!on!expanding!the!song!aspect!further!with!these!classes!to!help!them!with!the!
pronunciations!of!sounds,!such!as!‘sh’.!Class!4!did!not!engage!well!with!the!attention!grabber!
strategy,!and!different!one!will!be!tried!next!time.!The!writing!activity!was!successful,!we!noticed!
they!were!very!particular!about!how!neat!their!work!was,!we!tried!explaining!that!it!did!not!need!to!
be!‘perfect’,!but!I!do!not!think!they!understood.!The!song!was!successful!with!this!class,!but!we!
would!have!liked!to!explore!the!words!more,!such!as!the!letter!sounds!in!each!of!the!words,!to!
support!their!pronunciations!in!English.!Overall,!a!busy,!slightly!stressful,!and!successful!day!that!
provided!insight!into!the!school!and!the!students,!including!their!abilities!and!interests.!!

Daily&Reflection:!
It!was!great!to!be!able!to!observe!different!classes!today,!I!would!have!liked!to!have!done!this!on!our!
first!day,!as!we!then!would!have!been!more!prepared!to!teach.!The!first!lesson!we!taught,!then!went!
well.!The!students!appeared!engaged!and!eager!to!participate.!However,!we!noticed!they!were!
struggling!to!add!the!‘and’!in!the!song;!this!will!be!an!area!we!can!support!the!students!in.!The!
observations!provided!insight!into!the!school,!teachers!and!Nepalese!methods/practices!of!teaching.!
It!is!evident!from!the!observations!the!vast!differences!between!Nepalese!and!Australian!schools.!
For!example,!the!classrooms!lack!resources,!the!students!rote>learn!through!textbooks!and!copying!
information!the!teacher!has!written!on!the!board.!In!addition,!the!teachers!use!their!power!to!
control!the!students,!ensuring!they!do!not!make!noise,!or!move!from!their!designated!seating!areas.!
It!is!also!evident!the!students!fear!being!wrong/incorrect!and!work!very!hard!to!have!perfect!work,!
this!often!results!in!students!copying!work!from!their!peers.!In!addition,!I!have!noticed!students!lack!
creativity,!imagination,!and!uniqueness,!they!conform!to!what!the!teacher!and!school!wants/expects!
them!to!be.!

I!hope!during!my!time!at!the!school,!I!can!plan!and!implement!engaging,!fun,!hands>on!and!learning>
enriched!lessons!for!the!students,!while!inspiring!the!teachers/school!to!be!open!to!changing!their!
methods!of!teaching.!!

them!in!case!they!were!wrong.!Using!hangman!was!very!successful,!they!were!excited!and!engaged,!
while!practicing!their!spelling,!speaking,!and!knowledge!about!Australian!cities.!It!would!be!good!to!
expand!on!Possum!Magic!with!this!class.!!

Reflection:!
The!students!appeared!very!excited!about!us!
teaching!them,!and!about!playing!games.!
The!two!games!were!successful;!however,!it!
would!have!been!good!to!be!able!to!go!
outside!to!play!(not!allowed).!Hangman!
provided!a!fun!way!to!spell,!and!for!the!
students!to!learn!some!information!about!
Australia.!Pictionary!was!also!good,!it!
allowed!students!to!problem!solve!in!teams!
and!to!work!together.!This!was!also!good,!as!
it!allowed!students!to!take!turns!standing!up!
and!drawing!pictures,!which!is!very!different!
to!their!normal!school!tasks.!This!was!our!
first!time!with!this!class,!and!my!first!time!
ever!teaching!a!year!6!class.!Overall,!it!went!
well,!if!we!teach!this!class!again,!I!would!like!
to!do!something!different!to!gain!a!better!
insight!into!their!interests!and!abilities.!!

Reflection:!
This!was!my!first!time!teaching!this!class,!and!my!first>time!teaching!students!this!age.!This!was!a!
very!challenging!and!draining!lesson.!The!students!were!disrespectful,!did!not!listen,!and!were!not!
cooperative.!Throughout!the!lesson!we!tried!to!engage!them!in!different!activities,!but!none!seemed!
to!help.!We!also!tried!moving!students!to!help!with!the!challenging!behaviours.!One!student!was!
even!spoken!to!outside!of!the!classroom.!Despite!our!efforts,!this!lesson!was!very!hard,!and!I!felt!as!
though!I!had!failed!as!a!teacher.!The!other!teachers!said!this!is!a!challenging!class,!and!not!to!feel!
disheartened.!Next!time!we!teach!this!class,!we!will!try!a!more!structured!and!literacy!based!lesson,!
and!see!if!this!changes!how!the!students!behave.!!
