Major Duties & Responsibilities

Data Analysis

• Analyzing Food Security data sets using the relevant statistical or custom made software
(Integrated Data System (IDS), MS Excel, SPSS, Epi Info, GIS)
• Developing routine and non-routine analytical tools (charts, graphs, tables, etc) for the Food
Security / Research Analysts
• Developing analytical plans for primary, secondary and historical data
• Assisting in developing and enhancing the regular and ad hoc data collection instruments
(data collection forms) ensuring all indicators are analytically relevant and eventually entered
into a database
• Assembling and ensuring integrity of data sets, tables, charts, etc when required by internal or

• Working closely with the Geographic Information (GIS) specialist to improve spatial analysis
• Working closely with the Nutrition Data Analyst to support analytical activities of the
Nutrition unit as required including integration of nutrition indicators into the IDS

Data Management and Validation

• Developing and enhancing data management process (data collection, transfer, entry,
cleaning) ensuring it is conducted to the highest technical level possible
• Assisting in creating data validation procedures for historical and routine data in Nairobi and
field level
• Managing the FSNAU Integrated Database System (IDS) and the various data sets within with
respect to data cleanliness, validation, and precision as well as administration of the system
• Developing and enhancing data management process and data flow procedures ensuring hard
copy, soft copy, and metadata management system is robust and effective

Supervision

• Overseeing data processing work of Data Processor ensuring routine and non-routine
analytical tools are properly prepared
• Overseeing data validation system - supervising necessary staff involved with data cleanliness
and verification
• Overseeing filing of hard copy and digital field-based data sets, reports, and metadata ensuring
hard copies are properly stored and soft copies are properly stored and passed to the DILI
team (tasks conducted by Data Processor)

Other tasks

• Liaising with other agencies (WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, INGOs)to collect and share in food
security and nutrition related data sets (food aid, markets, etc)
• Participating and planning internal and external meetings regarding the utilization and
management of the FSNAU database system and FSNAU data.

Principal Accountabilities
(a) Economic research and reporting
• Research for key local and international economic developments affecting the growth of
the sectors;
• Verify and confirm all economic policies affecting the sectors and include these in the
reports;
• Analyze economic impact of key sector developments and policies;
• Update and prepare necessary tables;
• Review updated data and analyze economic trends;
• Prepare and analyze economic performance indicators;
• Prepare forecasts on key sector variables;
• Prepare draft economic reports;
• Assists the Deputy Chief Economist in finalizing reports; and
• Research on specific topics relevant to economic impact studies.
(b) Macro-economic database management
• Construct and maintain database for the key sectors and macro-economic aggregates.
• Coordinate with suppliers of statistics and indicators;
• Download relevant statistics from local and international databases; and
• Provide macroeconomic indicators to other parties based on requests.
• Quarterly and annual GDP forecasting
(c) Macro-econometric modeling
• Assist the Deputy Chief Economist in constructing, reviewing and compiling data
requirements of macroeconomic models;
• Run model or simulation runs;
• Prepare reports based on simulation runs; and
• Undertake background research on macroeconomic models and make recommendations
on their applicability.
(d) Miscellaneous ad hoc duties and responsibilities
• Assist in project evaluation studies;
• Participate in internal or inter-agency technical committees; and
• Attend local and regional conferences and workshops; and
• Carry out any other task as prescribed by Deputy Chief Economist or the Economic
Secretary.
