1. Identify and Describe Career


1. What is the career?- Publicist
2. Why does this career "call to you"?- Because I like to meet and talk to new
people everyday, and I think the “art” behind publicity when it comes to
large businesses or celebrities is very interesting.
3. What part of the career are you passionate about?- The part I like most
about the career is that it would allow me to make connections with a lot of
different people, and create an environment where something new
happens everyday.
4. What kind of work is involved in the job?- Publicists generate media
coverage for a specific client in order to promote them (whether positively
or negatively) to the public.
5. How much money does this career make?- The average salary is
$50,258. However, depending on the employer, a publicist’s salary can
range from $28,496 to $110,000.
6. What is the current and/or future job market like for this career?- The
future role of publicists is still very prominent, especially with the rise of
social media. Publicists will always be needed in order for effective
promotion, and for possible damage control.
7. Outside of education, what are the requirements for this job? Personality?
Experience? Character traits?- In order to be a publicist, you must have
strong oral and communication skills, as well as a creative side when it
comes to new ways to promote a client. Experience is also very important,
so it is recommended that you assist or work in as many public relations
firms as possible in order to move up the career ladder.
2. Identify and Describe Education Requirements for Career
1. What college/university/technical school would be best? Where is it
located? How much is the tuition?- University of Southern California,
located in Los Angeles, has the best public relations degree in the United
States. The yearly tuition is $54,259.
2. What are the requirements/classes/programs offered for this major?- In a
standard Public Relations degree, students are expected to take classes
in Business Mgmt, Communications Ethics, and Advertising, and to
complete an internship towards the end of the program.
3. What are the entrance requirements to get into this college and
major/program?- To get into USC, a GPA of 3.73 is required. Because the
program is so competitive, the college will review your GPA as well as
extra curricular within the school.
3. Explain your plan to reach your career goal
1. What do you need to do this school year in order to be prepared?- In order
to be prepared, I need to maintain my GPA and begin to start looking for
other publicists who may be able to tell me more about the job.
2. What do you need to accomplish by the time you graduate?- I hope to be
completely sure that I want to become a publicist by the time I graduate.
