Results of Assessments

During the archery unit, there were a couple of different assessments that

were used to test the students learning and understanding of the content that was

taught in the unit. The two primary assessments used were teacher observation and

the pre/post-test that was given at the beginning and end of the unit. Other

assessments that were used was an exit slip and informal checking for

understanding at the end of each lesson. Each of these assessments were a little

different to hopefully meet the different learning styles of all the students that were

in class.

The pre/post-test results surprised me the most out of all the assessments

used for the unit. I had one class that has never done archery before because it was

an all 9th grade class. At Hopkins Academy, they only teach archery to the high

school classes. The pre/post-test was on the 11 steps of how to properly shoot a

bow, which can be challenging to many if you do not have any archery background.

The average result on the pre-test for this class was about a 40%. After going

through the unit, the post-test results changed drastically. That average grade went

up to about an 80%. This was a great feeling as a teacher to see the grades improve

that much over just a short period of time.

The other written assessment was the exit slip that was given out in the

middle of the unit. It focused on the parts of the bow which was not the main focus

of the unit. I just touch on them on the first day of the unit. The students did poorly

on it and I ended up not counting it towards the final unit grade. I would change this

assessment by having it focus on the 11 steps on how to properly shoot a bow which
Hurley 10

was the main focus of the unit. This way I could gage the students learning in the

middle of the unit and I could make necessary adjustments to my teaching. This

assessment would be much more effective and help with the success of the students

on the post-test at the end of the unit.
