Question No.

: 8
A finished product must weight exactly 150 gms. The two raw material used in manufacturing the
product are A with cost of Rs. 2 per unit and B with a cost of Rs.8 per unit. At least 14 units of B
and not more than 20 units of A must be used. Each unit of A and B weighs 5 and 10 gms
respectively. How many of each type of raw material should be used for each unit of the final
product in order to minimize the cost?

Solution:

Let, X1 denote the number of type A raw material and X2 denotes the number of type B raw material
to be used for each unit of the final product.
The above question can be formulated as below:
Table:…. Showing the formulation of above information

X1 X2 RHS Equation form

Minimize 2 8 Min 2X1 + 8X2

Constraint 1 5 10 = 150 5X1 + 10X2 = 150
Constraint 2 1 0 <= 20 X1 <= 20
Constraint 3 0 1 >= 14 X2 >= 14

Using software, the following final values are obtained:

Variable Status Value

X1 Basic 2
X2 Basic 14
Artificial 1 NON-Basic 0
slack 2 Basic 18
surplus 3 NON-Basic 0
Optimal Value (Z) 116
Interpretation:
The values above signify that 2 units of Product A and 14 units of Product B should be produced
in order to incur minimum cost of Rs. 116. Further, the slack value of 18 units signifies that 18
units of Product A have been underutilized.
