People have differing views about the basis of our forgiveness. What are some of the views that people have?
If someone were to ask you, “What is the basis of forgiveness,” what would you say? Would you agree with
me that we need to know what God has declared to be the basis of forgiveness? It is when we understand
God’s basis of forgiveness that we can have the assurance of our salvation. In this lesson, we will study what
the Bible says about forgiveness, the significance of the death of Jesus Christ as it relates to our forgiveness,
and how this truth should impact our liv es.
What does God require as the payment for sin according to these two verses? Why do you
think He requires this? ____________________________________________________

You will see that even before God gave the Law or the Ten Commandments to Moses, He required an
animal sacrifice to save the Israelites from His judgment. We read about this in the book of Exodus. As a
background, God’s people were in bondage in Egypt. When God sent Moses to tell the Pharaoh of Egypt
to let the Israelites go, Pharaoh refused to obey God. So God sent nine plagues to judge Egypt for their
idolatry, to show Pharaoh His power, and to convince him to release the Israelites. But Pharaoh was
stubborn and hard hearted and he disregarded God’s judgments. So God sent the last and ultimate plague.
3. What were God’s instructions to the Israelites in order for them to be saved from His
judgment? Read Exodus 12:3, 5, 21-23.

What kind of lamb did God require according to verse 5?
______________________________________________________________________
When God would see the blood on the doorpost, what did He promise to do?
______________________________________________________________________
4. What do you think would motivate the Israelites to obey Moses’ instructions to kill a lamb,
sprinkle the blood on their door posts and remain inside their houses?
______________________________________________________________________
God kept His word and spared the first-born of the sons of Israel because of the blood of the lamb. But He
killed all of the first born of the Egyptians. God told Moses to call this event the Passover. This event is
still being celebrated by the Jews up till today. When the angel of death saw the lamb’s blood on the
doorposts, he passed over the house and did not kill the firstborn in that house.
When God gave His system of laws to Israel, He also established a sacrificial system for the payment of
people’s sins.
What was the meaning of the person laying his hands on the head of the animal before
killing it?
______________________________________________________________________
“Atonement” requires ___________________ – at that moment, the sinner becomes “one” with the
animal which will bear his sins and die for the sins. (i.e. “at one” ment)
The sacrificial system of the Old Testament continued for over 1,500 years. However, it was only
temporary until God gave His perfect sacrifice for sin, the death of Jesus Christ on the cross.
6. What did John the Baptist call Jesus Christ in John 1:29? ___________________________.

What was the mission of Jesus? _____________________________________________.
This happened to demonstrate that Jesus is our Passover Lamb. When we place our faith and trust
in Jesus to save us, God applies the blood of Jesus to our lives and does not judge us for our sins
anymore, but passes over us.
11. Read Colossians 2:13-14. How many of your sins has God forgiven?

ILLUSTRATION:
ALL OF OUR SINS WERE PAID FOR IN ADVANCE
A certificate of debt is a business term. In Roman times, when someone incurred a debt, he was
issued a certificate (an i.o.u.) in his own writing signifying what he was supposed to pay. When
someone was caught committing a crime and put into prison, a certificate was placed on the door of
his cell. When he had paid the debt or served the full sentence, the Roman judge would stamp the

certificate of debt with the word “TETELESTAI’. This was the exact word that Jesus uttered on
the cross before He died. “TETELESTAI” means “it is finished”, “paid in full”.
12. Read Hebrews 10:10-14. How many times did Jesus have to die and offer His body
as a sacrifice to pay for our sins? ___________________________
APPLICATION:
1. We have confidence to enter into God’s presence through the blood of Jesus. (v.19)
2. We are to draw near with a sincere heart, in full assurance of faith. (v.22)
3. We are to hold fast to our confession of faith. (v.23)
4. We are to encourage one another to love and good deeds. (v.24)
5. We are not to forsake meeting together. (v.25)
6. We are not to keep on sinning. (v.26)
Knowing that we have been forgiven by God should encourage us to avoid sin and not to
turn God’s grace into licentiousness.
Is there any recurring sin in your life? Confess them to Jesus and repent now!
MEMORY VERSE:
Hebrews 9:22 “In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without
the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.”
