SINGAPORE: A supervisor was jailed for two months for repeatedly striking his
Indonesian maid on the head and back with a television remote control, news
reports said on Thursday.
Muhammad Shafiq Woon Abdulah admitted in a Singapore court he
physically abused the women on several occasions between June and October
2002, The Straits Time said.
The magistrate’s court heart that Shafiq, 31, began striking Winarti, 22,
about a month after she started working for him.
He hit her on the head with the TV set’s remote control because he was

Thousands of workers have demanded that the minimum wage be increased 30
percent starting next year. During Labor Day rallies on Thursday , workers
presented a list of “Ten Public Demands” among thempay increases.
Confederation of Indonesian Worker’s Union (KSPI) chairman Said Igbal said he
was optimistic that the goverment would heed the deemand.
“The goverment has increased the minimum wage by 20 to 25 percent before.
This year, we demand that the increase reaches 30 percent,” he told jurnalists
during a rally at Hotel Indonesia traffic circle.
Said also asked the government to eliminate outsourcing practices because it
resulted in unfair treatment for workers.
The workers alsodemanded free public transportation and low-cost housing, as
well as 12 years free education and scholarhips for their children.
“”we will strike if the government turns a blind eye to our demands,” he said
Around 100.000 workers from Jakarta and surroundingareas, such as Bekasi and
Tangerang, gathered at Hotel Indonesia traffic circle and marched to the State
Palace.
At about 1 p.m., they moved to Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Senayan to hold a

six robberies and killed two police officer.

Indonesia shine at run for friends

Two hundred runners from Indonesia and Papua New Guinea (PNG) ran
from wutung to skow in the Internasional Cross Border 10K on Wednesday.
The race started at wafa village, vanimo, 7,5 kilometers from the RI-PNG
border in wutung, PNG and finished in Skouw, Indonesia. The event, which
adopted “Run for friendship” as its theme, started at 8 a.m. eastern Indonesia time.
Heavy rain did not affect the participants who kept their high spirit
throughout the race. The event was dominated by male runners. There were only
eight female runners in the event.
Hanafi of Indonesia was first placed in the male category, completing the
course in 31 minutes. A nother Indonesia, FG Manori was first placed in the
female category, completing the course in 44 minutes. The winners in both
categories received a cash prize of Rp 5 milion respectively.
The cross borderace was the first of its kind held between the two
neighbouring countries and was made possible thanks to cooperation between the
Indonesia papua province administration and the PNG sandaun provicial
administration, as well as the support of PT Freeport Indonesia as the event
partner.
