‫ﻪ اﻟﺮﺣﻤﻦ اﻟﺮﺣﻴﻢ‬‫ﺑﺴﻢ اﻟ‬

To begin, know that the rulers at the time of Imaam Ahmad were M'utazilah and Jahmiyyah and
that The Ulamaa are in consensus regarding the fact that The Jahmiyyah are Kuffaar
(Disbelievers). This was mentioned by Al-Lalikaa'i and At-Tabraani and other than him. In fact Al-
[Bukhaari would consider he who does not make Takfeer of them to be Jaahil (Ignorant)[1][2

It is well known that this sect came with a number of different beliefs that are according to Ahl-As-
Sunnah Kufr (Disbelief) such as the belief that The Quran is created and the rejection of Allaah's
attributes. In fact, the Muslim layman who hears what they believed has no doubt that they were
Kuffaar and does not need a scholar to proceed him in order to believe the truth in this matter.[3].
It is not from the Manhaj of Ahl As-Sunnah, in fact, to use anything or anyone as evidence except
that which comes from Allaah. As for statements of The Scholars, however knowledgable they are,
then everyone's saying can be rejected or accepted depending on its agreement with The
Revelation

Despite this clarity and agreement from The Scholars it is been ascribed that one of The Great
Scholars of this Ummah, Al Imaam Ahmad, that he did not make Takfeer of The Jahmiyyah and
specically that he did not make Takfeer of The Ruler of his time who was Jahmi. This is of course a
mistake and a terrible thing to ascribe to The Imaam as failing to make Takfeer of a Kaafir is Kufr
itself! Which is an issue well known between The Muslims and The Salaf spoke about it extensively

Al-Khateeb Al-Baghdaadi mentioned in Taareekh Baghdaad that Abu Salmah[4] said "He who does
not bear witness to the Kufr of the Kaafir then He is a Kaafir". It is also narrated from Sufyaan At-
Thawri that he said: The Quraan is the speech of Allaah Azza Wa Jalla and he who says that it is
[created then he is a Kaafir, and he who doubts in his Kufr then he is a Kaafir.[5

The reality is that Al Imaam Ahmad used to make Takfeer on The Jahmiyyah and we will, in shaa
Allaah, mention some narrations concerning this issue

Al Khallaal and Abdullaah bin Al Imaam Ahmad both mentioned that Al-Imaam Ahmad said:'The
Jahmiyyah are Kuffaar (Disbelievers)'. – As-Sunnah page 2137 and Kitaab As-Sunnah page 500
.respectively

This clear statement is like that of Al-Imaam Al-Barbahaari, who was a student of Imam Ahmad's
student, when he said in Sharh As-Sunnah: The Jahmi is Kaafir and not from Ahl Al-Qiblah

Al-Imaam Ahmad also said: 'Whoever says that Allaah will not be seen in the Akhirah that he has
disbelieved, may the curse of Allaah be upon him'. -Ash Sharee'ah 577. Nowadays if you say 'May
The Curse of Allaah be upon The Grave Worshippers' they might make a Facebook page about you
and set up stalls warning from your 'Aqeedah. If you make Takfeer of those that set themselves up
as partners to Allaah subhaanahu wa ta'aalaa in judgement and in worship then you get called a
Khaariji. As it says in the Authentic Hadeeth in Saheeh Muslim Islaam began as something strange
: and it will return to something strange so give glad tidings to The Strangers
Al-Imaam Ahmad said to one of those who debated him regarding The Qur'an when the man said
that the knowledge of Allaah is created: 'Oh Kaafir you have disbelieved!'[6

Is this Takfeer of an individual or a general Takfeer that does not apply to individuals (If someone
can imagine such a thing)? The misconception regarding making Takfeer of the Jahmiyyah
specifically is another trick of The Murji'ah which leads to considering 'types' of Kuffaar to be
Kuffaar whilst considering the individuals who follow such Kufr to be Muslims. This conception
was refuted many times by the Ulamaa and it is enough to know the statement of The
Prophet [7] :Whoever changes his religion then kill him

This judgement can not be carried out except on a specific individual. How can we kill the 'type' of
whoever changes his religion? In addition, look at how the Sahaabah dealt with those that
followed Musaylamah and the other Murtaddoon (apostates), Did they deal with them as if they
were muslims? Or did they call them all Murtaddeen and fight them and take their wealth?[8

Ibn Battah said when speaking about individuals from the M'utazila like Al Murisi, Abu Duaad and
'Alaaf aswell as others: Verily these were upon Riddah (Apostacy).[9

Ibn Battah also said: Whoever says the Quraan is created then he is Kaafir and his blood is Halaal
and whoever has doubt in his Takfeer or stops (or hesitates) in his Takfeer then he is Kaafir.[10

As for Al Ma'moon who was one of the Jahmi rulers at the time of Imaam Ahmad then The Imam
said a number of clear statements that indicate that he believed that he was Kaafir

For example, he said regarding him: 'And what Balaa' (tribulation) is greater than that which The
Enemy of Allaah introduced, The Enemy of Islam, from the killing of The Sunnah?'.[11

Also, when he mentioned that The Ruler (As-Sultaan) is the Wali of the woman who has no Wali, it
was said to him 'You say As-Sultaan (The Ruler) and were upon what you see today!? He replied 'I
[do not say upon what he see today, I just say As-Sultaan'.[12

It may come to the mind of the reader that Al-Imaam Ahmad didn’t do Khurooj( I.e. didn’t revolt)
against Al-Ma'moon and the reason for this was a lack of Qudrah (Power). In fact, it is mentioned
in Tabaqaat Al-Hanaabilah[13] that he said: 'Whoever calls to Bid'ah (Innovation) then do not
respond to him and if you managed to remove him then do so'. The Arabic word used was
'Qadartum' which is from 'Qudrah' meaning power or ability so the intention is enough power to
remove such a leader

Al-Khallaal mentioned a narration in As-Sunnah in which was said to Al Imaam Ahmad that they
had come across a grave in Tartoos. The people of Tartoos said regarding the person in The Grave
'The Kaafir, may Allaah not have mercy on him' upon hearing this Al-Imaam Ahmad said 'Yes, May
Allaah not have mercy on him, he who established this and came with this'. As it is been said, it
was Al-Ma'moon who was buried in Tartoos and it was he who is meant by having established and
[come with the saying that the Qur'an is created.[14

He also made Du'aa against Al-Ma'moon saying: May Allaah fight him. – Tabaqaat Al Hanaabilah
382/1

Another point that will clarify what we intend to convey, in shaa Allaah, is that Al-Imaam Ahmad
bin Nasr Al Khazaa'i made Takfeer of Al-Ma'moon and called the people of Baghdaad to fight him.
They prepared for Khurooj but Al-Ma'moon killed him. Al-Imaam Ahmad said with regards to him
'May Allaah have mercy on him. Maa Askhaa![15] Indeed, he generously gave his life for Him. –
Taareekh Ibn Katheer 303/10

Look at the difference between modern day claimants of Salafiyyah, those who claim to be upon
the path of Al-Imaam Ahmad, and the stances of The Imaam himself. Imaam Al-Khazaa'i not only
made Takfeer of the ruler but also encouraged The People to do Khurooj and indeed they prepared
to so! Ad-Daarimi said in Ar Radd 'Alaa Al Jahmiyyah: 'And what difference is there between the
Jahmiyyah and between them (meaning the mushrikeen that rejected the Quran and said it was
?created) in order that we should be afraid to kill them and make Takfeer of them

This is bearing in mind that, in many ways Al-Ma'moon did not openly change the Sharee'ah.
Certainly not in the same way that modern day rulers have done. Nowadays, however, if you make
Takfeer of a ruler who's Kufr is much clearer than that of he who says that the Quraan is created
your labelled Takfiri and Khaariji. In fact your often put in prison (as the Saudi regime for example
implements) and your certainly labelled a Takfiri by the modern day followers of The Jews of The
Qiblah.[16

To conclude, we advise whoever has fallen into any of the aforementioned misconceptions to
return to The Book of Allaah and The Sunnah upon the understanding of the Salaf. Islaam is one
religion, it is clear and its basic principle (Asl Ad Deen) is not complicated. Leave extreme
following of Scholars! How can someone who considers, for example, following Al-Imaam Maalik
blindly in Fiqh and not returning to The Quran and Sunnah to be Haraam also believe that its
!?allowed (rather Waajib!) to blindly follow a modern day scholar in Aqeedah

Making Takfeer of The Mushrikeen is a part of La ilaaha illa Allaah and is therefore from the basis
!of this Deen and a differentiating factor between Faith and Disbelief

How can we leave the Quran and Sunnah and Consensus of The Sahaabah and call people like
Mursi Muslims?! Mursi, who rejects the verses of Allaah, says that the Aqeedah of the Muslims is
?!the same as the Aqeedah of the Christians and essentially called himself Christian

In The Sharee'ah he could not be excused for what he said except if he was insane, and would
anyone with a brain say that we can't make Takfeer of him until we take him to a therapist and
make certain that he is sane? Why don’t we call all Jews Muslims until we verify that each
individual Jew is not insane? There is no doubt that this is contradictory to The Sunnah and not
judging by what is apparent[17] . This is a disgusting innovation in The Deen. How can we say we
cannot make Takfeer of him until we see a scholar make Takfeer of him? If we read in The Quraan
that the meat of Pigs is Haraam, should we carry on eating it until we hear a scholar verify the
!?ruling

In the narration that we saw about the people of Tartoos, notice that they called the person in the
grave Kaafir. Al Imaam Ahmad didn’t say to them 'How can you proceed the Scholars?!' Rather he
?agreed with them. Do you believe that the people of Tartoos were all 'Ulamaa

To conclude, Al-Imaam Ahmad said with regards to the Jahmiyyah: 'I used to not make takfeer of
them until I read verses from the Quran'.[18]. So why try to use The Imaam as evidence anyway
.and leave the book Allaah? Do as he did himself and return to The Revelation

Khalq Af'aal Al 'Ibaad page 35[1]

.Ibn Al Qayyim spoke about their consensus in An-Nooniyyah so refer to that[2]

Although as we have mentioned The Scholars proceed him, WalHamduLillaah and in fact came[3]
.to Ijmaa' (Consensus/Agreement) regarding this matter

Abu Salmah grew up in the first and best generations and died in the year 246 Hijri. He is[4]
Salma bin Shayb An Naysaboori An Nisaa'i, the Muhaddith of Ahl Makkah and one of the Kibaar
Ulamaa. Al Muzzi narrated that he is Saadiq (Truthful) and Abu Naeem narrated that he is
Thiqqah (Trustworthy). Ibn Hibaan mentioned him in Kitaab AthThiqaat. Muslim narrated from
him as well as Abu Haatim and The Collectors of As-Sunan

Kitaab As-Sunnah of Abdullah the son of Al-Imaam Ahmad[5]

Al-Hilyah 197/9[6]

Narrated by Al-Bukhaari[7]

The reality is of course the latter. Ash Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdil Wahhaab mentioned and[8]
.refuted this misconception in The Book Mufeed Al Mustafeed extensively

Sharh As-Sunnah 117[9]

Al-Ibaanah 129[10]

Al-Ahkaam As-Sultaaniyyah 20[11]

Al-Ahkaam As-Sultaaniyyah[12]

315/2[13]

As-Sunnah lil Khallaal 95/5[14]

Meaning there isn’t more generous than him which is of course not intended open-endedly as[15]
..Allaah is The Most Generous etc

A name that the Salaf use to give to The Murji'ah[16]

In Islaam we are ordered to judge by the apparent and not to follow up that which we have no[17]
.knowledge of
