Teacher: Mr.

McClellan Age Group: 3 Grade

Lesson Unit: Rocks and Minerals Approximate Class Size: 15
Lesson Title: Metamorphic
Time Required: 1 Period
Date: 12/2017

Unit Outcome: Demonstrate knowledge of materials that comprise Earth’s crust, and
demonstrate skill in classifying these materials.

Curricular Outcomes: Grade 3 Science: Rocks and Minerals - 1a, 4a

Lesson Objectives: Students will:

1. Define what a metamorphic rock is.
2. Explain how metamorphic rocks are formed.
3. Create their own metamorphic rocks.

Pre-lesson: Is there anything I need to prepare for my lesson?

Metamorphic rock powerpoint
Metamorphic rock worksheet
parchment paper
Tin foil
Starburst Candy, 3 per student
Pencils
Toaster oven

First 3 Minutes: What do I want the students to do in the first 3 minutes?

Sit down quietly
Read the class agenda
 Review
 What are metamorphic rocks?
 Make our own metamorphic rocks
 Clean up

Introduction: How can I “grab” their attention and pull them into my lesson?
1. Review what we learned about igneous and sedimentary rocks.
2. Tell the students that we are going to make our very own metamorphic rocks.

Body: How can I keep each student involved in their own learning? Am I going to reach every
student today? What am I going to do to ensure to meet every need?

1. Show the students the metamorphic rock powerpoint:

a. How are they formed?
i. Formed beneath the surface of the Earth
ii. Completely change the minerals inside the rock
iii. They are NOT melted
b. Examples
i. Limestone to Marble
2. Show video on how metamorphic rocks are formed.
3. Tell the students we are now going to make our own metamorphic rocks!
4. Give the students the following instructions. Do a demo while explaining.
a. Grab 3 starburst, make sure they are different colours.
b. Then grab 1 parchment paper and 1 piece of tin foil.
c. Stack all three starbursts on top of each other, and carefully wrap them tightly.
d. Write your initials on the tin foil and then show the teacher.
5. Students who finish first can then work on the exit card while they wait for the other
students.
6. Once all the students are done wrapping, put all the starbursts in the toaster oven for 1-2
min. DON’T LET THEM MELT.
7. Explain to the students we are adding heat to the rocks… ask them what else we need to
create a metamorphic rock? (pressure)
8. Take the rocks out of the oven, tell the students to be careful cause they are hot. Instruct
them to twist and squish their rocks. Then let them cool for a couple minute before they
open them.
9. Instruct the students to draw a picture of their rock on the back of the exit card.
10. Clean up.

Conclusion: What can I do to be sure the students have obtained my objectives? How can I
bring the students to closure? Do they understand what we’ve discussed today?

Teacher will walk around the classroom to help students and answer any questions they might
have.

Students will complete the exit card on metamorphic rocks and rock formation which will reinforce
the concepts learned in class.

Homework/Assessment: What can I give to the students that can support or reinforce the
material presented? How can I get the student to a higher level of comprehension?
Most of the assessment with this lesson will be done as formative assessment. This will be in the
form of class discussion, answering questions, and observing.

Students will hand in their exit card before leaving class, giving me feedback on how well they
understand the concepts we have covered in class over the past 2 weeks.
