Chief Engineer’s instructions
It must be avoided to maintain the ship at speeds between 62-67 rpm because the auxiliary blowers can produce
damage.
At sea passage, it must not descend under the minimum power of 6867 kW continuous rating, without warning
the chief engineer.
When arriving, the decrease speed programming will engage when the handle will be in FULL AHEAD position (66
rpm). It must count a total of 6 minutes to pass from 80 rpm to 66 rpm.
Certain maintenance operations, such as turbocharger cleaning, Exhaust Gas Boiler cleaning, needs to be made
at 75 rpm, after job completion the speed chosen by the Master must be set back.
When returning to a low maneuver speed (below 66 rpm), a step of minimum 5 min must be done at “Full”
maneuver speed (66 rpm), before reducing to maneuver speed.
Crash stop :
In case of CRASH STOP, put the chadburn in MAX ASTERN.
On short:
Event What happens What needs to be done
Emergency stop Main Engine or Black Out Alarm « Shut down active » Put the chadburn on « STOP »
Main Engine slowdown in case of safety Alarm « Slow down active ». The Put the chadburn on Slow Ahead
engine passes on to Slow Ahead
Starting Failure Alarm « Start Failure » Put the chadburn on « STOP » and
restart
Black out :
In case of Black out, put the chadburn on STOP and wait for orders from engine room.
The duty officer must read the card n° Bridge – 510 Use of the Propulsion system
Certain temporary orders could be given by the Chief Engineer in case of special events (e.g.: piston grinding,
sailing in hot waters, etc.)
2- AUXILIARY CONDUCTS :
2.6.1 Winches:
The duty officer must have knowledge of card n° Bridge-640 Mooring Equipment’s description
3 – Alarm Management
Special or temporary orders could be given by the Chief Engineer regarding the alarms, the failures occurred or
any other specific circumstances imposing a special attention, these orders are recorded in the bridge logbook
and signed by the Bridge Duty Officers.
3-1 At maneuver
During the maneuvers after the working hours, the Engine team will communicate to bridge his presence in the
engine room. After the maneuver, the Chief Engineer, will switch the alarms to the engine duty officer, and he will
notice the bridge that the engine team left the engine room.
3-2 At sea
After the working hours, the bridge duty officer must ensure that the alarms are switched to the engine duty
officer (Position UNATTENDED at AMS Electronics Watch Bridge Unit), that so in all circumstances or the engine
room is unoccupied (ex: safety drill)
The Bridge duty officer must have in mind that only one person in the engine room is exposed to dangerous
situations. That’s why the engine duty officer is obliged to use the Dead Man alarm system when he stays alone
in the engine room, and also to inform the bridge when leaving the compartment. In this instant the bridge
duty officer will check if the alarms are passed to the right duty engineer.
However, if no signs from the engine room within 15 minutes, or no acknowledgement of Dead Man’s Alarm,
the bridge duty officer must check that nothing happened to the engine duty officer by sending a crewmember
to check.
3-3 Alongside
After the working hours, the alarms are transferred to the engine duty officer. In case of alarm, the engine duty
officer will report his attendance in the engine room to the bridge duty officer, via walky-talky, from the start to
the end of his intervention. Once informed, the bridge duty officer, will ensure the safety of the duty engineer as
well as at sea (see the previous paragraph)
