Com Words of Confession and Assurance: Knowing of Paul’s conviction that we
confess with our mouth and with our heart we believe and are justified,

Lord God. May I be saved by the Lord Jesus Christ, who is faithful and

Background of Jacob’s Life
• Twin brother of Esau; Jacob born second, grasping the heel of Esau
• Jacob was a quiet man, stayed amongst the tents, cooking
• Jacob insisted that Esau sell him his birthright when Esau was hungry for
some of Jacob’s stew
• Jacob, in disguise with his brother’s clothes and wearing animal skins on
his arms and neck, tricked his father, who’s eyes were weak, into thinking
Jacob was Esau, and so Jacob received the blessing that was meant for
Esau
• Esau sought to kill his brother, so Jacob fled to another land
• Twenty years pass, and at the Lord’s direction, Jacob journeys back to the
place of his father, unsure of how Esau will greet or treat him
Making Amends
• Jacob desires to make things right with his brother
• Sends messengers bearing gifts on ahead of him to give to Esau
• Jacob bows down in humility as a sign of apology
• Esau runs to meet Jacob, embracing him, and they both wept
• God’s grace was alive and at work in this brotherly reunion
The Stage is Set, the Call is Given
• Has anyone ever had a perfect life, with no disagreements or problems
with a family member, or friend?
• A situation every individual can relate too
• God desires reconciliation
o Colossians 1:22 “But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical
body through death to present you holy in his sight…”
Action Steps
• Recognize the need to reconcile
• Pray for wisdom and grace
• Take the first step, make the first call
• Pacify - be peaceful, accept responsibility
• Offer an apology, ask for forgiveness
• Listen with understanding
• Pray with thanksgiving for patience and perseverance

• The family of Janice Spiess, who died August 11. A memorial service will
be held here on Sunday, August 22 at 2PM, with a meal to follow.
• Linda Rupp, who had a second surgery this past Thursday.
• Edna Rice, who is in Fairlawn for rehab.
• Gary Frazier, who is home recovering from shoulder surgery.
