Preference adalah suatu bentuk pernyataan yang menyatakan perasaan lebih suka
dari yang lainnnya. Dalam Bahasa Indonesia, ungkapan ini tidak begitu sulit, dimana
kita cukup mengucapkan “Lebih Suka dari”, namun dalam Bahasa Inggris, ada
beberapa bentuk yang dapat digunakan untuk menyatakan pernyataan di atas,
diantaranya adalah:
Prefer… .to….
Like… .better ….than…
Would rather….than….
Would prefer….rather than….
Prefer…. rather than …

Pola ke-1 : Subyek + prefer + noun + to + noun

Contoh : She prefers milk to tea
(Dia lebih suka susu dari pada teh)
Pola ke-2 : Subyek + like + noun + better than + noun
Contoh : I like coffee better than tea
(Saya lebih suka kopi daripada teh)
Pola ke-3 : Subyek + like + gerund + better than + gerund
Contoh : He likes dancing better than singing
(Dia lebih suka menari daripada menyanyi)
Pola ke-4 : Subyek + prefer + gerund + to + gerund
Contoh : I prefer reading to dreaming
(Saya lebih suka membaca daripada melamun)
Pola ke-5 : Subyek + would rather + bare infinitive + than + Verb-I
Contoh : I would rather sleep than go
(Saya lebih suka tidur daripada pergi)
Pola ke-6 : Subyek + would prefer + noun + rather than + noun
Contoh : They would prefer orange rather than apple
(Mereka lebih suka jeruk daripada apel)
Pola ke-7 : Subyek + prefer + to V-I + rather than + to V-I
Contoh : She prefers to think rather than to speak
(Dia lebih suka berfikir daripada berbicara)
Pola ke-8 : Subyek + would prefer + to V-I + rather than + to V-I
Contoh : He woud prefer to study rather than to sleep
(Dia telah suka belajar daripada tidur)
