with her daughter, Amanda M., who is listed as a schoolteacher. They appear to be living with the

Volunteer Infantry and A. C. of Mass, Independent Division 24th Army Corps pursuant to order of
War Department of May 29, 1865. MOFFATT, James W. - Captain; 37; Aug 27, 1862, Wheeling,
WV; June 16, 1865; Elected Captain at Organization of the Company. Engaged in action at
Winchester, Virginia June 13, 14 and 15, 1863. Mustered out at Richmond, Virginia. (Note -
commissioned Aug 25, 1862) (68) When the regiment started on the raid by way of Strasburg, a
part of it was left behind at Moorefield. This detail of about 75 men, and about the same number of
the Tenth West Virginia Infantry, the latter under command of Capt. Darnell of the latter regiment,
and the whole under command of Capt. J. W. Moffatt of Company G of the Twelfth, struck tents
and started for Winchester with a wagon train of supplies for Cluseret's command, leaving
Moorefield the 28th. At Wordensville, four miles out, they were attacked by Rebel cavalry. The
Wheeling Intelligencer of June -, 1865, in a sketch of the history of the Twelfth, said of this affair:
"They were attacked by about 300 of Imboden's cavalry, and, notwithstanding the largely superior
force of the enemy, Capt. Moffat repulsed them handsomely, driving them several miles, and
conducted the train safely to Gen. Cluseret at Winchester." (69) The Intelligencer's statement
regarding this affair is not strictly correct, for the Rebels captured 52 horses from the train. No
blame attaches to Capt. Moffatt, however, as he was a brave and faithful officer. (70) After this
attack and repulse Capt. Moffatt and his train-guard had no further trouble. On the route they
crossed the south branch of the Potomac, passed through Romney, crossed Lost River, passed
through Blue Gap, crossed Capon River, and on the fifth day out, January 1st, 1863, arrived at
Winchester, the train-guards of the Twelfth rejoining here their regiment. This was the day on which
the President's Emancipation Proclamation was to take effect, but strange to say the colored
people of Winchester seemed utterly ignorant of the fact that there was such a thing as any
proclamation of freedom. (191) He told me during the conversation that Gilmore was to take
thirty men and he was to be one of them and blow up Back Creek bridge. I placed him under close
guard, and soon as daylight came I sent a message to Col. McReynolds giving him all the essential
details of the foregoing account, and asked him to send a detachment of men sufficient to capture
Gilmore's men; requesting him also to send an officer of the Twelfth West Virginia regiment in
charge of the detachment; and if my memory serves me rightly, he sent Capt. Moffatt, of Company
G. Return of Capt. James W. Moffatt's Company "G," 12th Regiment West Va. Infantry
Volunteers, stationed at Stevenson's Depot, on the 14th day of December, 1864, together with a

Aunt Lillian won the West Virginia "Golden Horseshoe Award" for scholarship in
1934 in Doddridge County. Obituary... Lillian M. Griffith, 83, of Shady Spring,
died in the early morning Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at the Daniels Center following a
long illness. She was born Feb. 22, 1920, at Bering Creek near Charleston to the
late Lawrence Moffatt and Zella Knight Moffatt. Mrs. Griffith received her early
education in Doddridge County at Rock Run Elementary and Smithburg
Elementary, where she was a recipient of the West Virginia Golden Horseshoe
Award. She was a 1938 graduate of Doddridge County High School. After
graduation she completed a year of secretarial training. Mrs. Griffith lived in Shady
Spring the last 55 years of her life and retired as secretary at Shady Spring
Elementary School with more than 25 years of service. She was a member of First
Baptist Church of Shady Spring. She was preceded in death by her husband of
42 years, Curtis M. Griffith Sr., on Dec. 2, 1984; four brothers, James Moffatt,
Joseph Moffatt, Julius Moffatt and Robert Moffatt; and a sister, Lucille Knight.
Survivors include three sons, Curtis M. Griffith Jr. of Shady Spring, Arland Griffith of
Irish Mountain and Lawrence J. Griffith and wife, Doris, of Alderson; two daughters,
Elizabeth Cheek and husband, Abbott, of Cool Ridge and Margaret Arlington and
husband, James, of Burkburnett, Texas; a sister, Virginia L. Robbins at home; a
brother, Jack Moffatt and wife, Ruth, of Columbus, Ind.; a very special nephew,
David Shrewsbury and wife, Tina, of Damascus, Md.; a very special niece, Doris
