Hospitality

Hospitality refers to the relationship between a guest and a host, wherein the host receives the guest with
goodwill, including the reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers. Louis, chevalier de Jaucourt
describes hospitality in the Encyclopédie as the virtue of a great soul that cares for the whole universe through
the ties of humanity.[4]

Hospitality ethics is a discipline that studies this usage of hospitality.

Etymology

Derives from the Latin hospes,[5] meaning "host", "guest", or "stranger". Hospes is formed from hostis, which
means "stranger" or "enemy" (the latter being where terms like "hostile" derive). By metonymy the Latin word
'Hospital' means a guest-chamber, guest's lodging, an inn.[6]Hospes is thus the root for the English words host
(where the p was dropped for convenience of pronunciation), hospitality, hospice, hostel and hotel.

Hospitality industry

The hospitality industry is a broad category of fields within service industry that includes lodging, event
planning, theme parks, transportation, cruise line, and additional fields within the tourism industry.[1]

The hospitality industry is a multibillion-dollar industry that depends on the availability of leisure time and
disposable income. A hospitality unit such as a restaurant, hotel, or an amusement park consists of multiple
groups such as facility maintenance and direct operations (servers, housekeepers, porters, kitchen workers,
bartenders, management, marketing, and human resources etc.).

Usage rate, or its inverse "vacancy rate", is an important variable for the hospitality industry. Just as a factory
owner would wish a productive asset to be in use as much as possible (as opposed to having to pay fixed costs
while the factory is not producing), so do restaurants, hotels, and theme parks seek to maximize the number of
customers they "process" in all sectors. This led to formation of services with the aim to increase usage rate
provided by hotel consolidators. Information about required or offered products are brokered on business
networks used by vendors as well as purchasers.

In looking at various industries, "barriers to entry" by newcomers and competitive advantages between current
players are very important. Among other things, hospitality industry players find advantage in old classics
(location), initial and ongoing investment support (reflected in the material upkeep of facilities and the luxuries
located therein), and particular themes adopted by the marketing arm of the organization in question (for
example at theme restaurants). Also very important are the characteristics of the personnel working in direct
contact with the customers. The authenticity, professionalism, and actual concern for the happiness and well-
being of the customers that is communicated by successful organizations is a clear competitive advantage.

WHO TRAVELS WITH GRAY & CO.?

Gray & Co. travellers are all ages and from around the globe. They want seamless execution and the highest
levels of service, diligence, quality, and discretion from start to finish—from the earliest stages of planning
where and when to travel to after the trip has been completed. Rather than looking for “deals”, they are looking
for good value and customized experiences.

WHAT HAPPENS ON A TYPICAL DAY?

In the morning, we bike or walk for a few hours between historic and cultural sites, stopping for coffee along
the way. Lunch tends to be at a casual restaurant or picnic. In the late afternoons, most people love to relax,
read, have massages, shop, taste wine, etc. Dinners can be Michelin-starred affairs, but more often than not, our
travellers love casual bistros, and trattorias. You choose. We recommend at least two nights at the same
fabulous hotel, villa, estancia or châteaux to let you unpack and unwind. Or take over an entire hotel – some of
our faves include Estancia Vik in Uruguay, Otahuna Lodge in New Zealand, and Awasi in San Pedro de
Atacama, Chile.

WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT CAN WE EXPECT ON THE TRIP?

Multiple minivan and SUV-type vehicles allow for maximum flexibility and security. Most trips feature a team
of guides, experts, drivers, and mechanics.

CAN YOU PROVIDE A BIKE, HELMET AND/OR OTHER GEAR FOR ME?

We can provide high quality hybrid touring bikes and carbon fibre road bikes to all cyclists. Many people find
this to be simpler than shipping their bike. We can also arrange for helmets and other gear to be available.

WHAT IF I WANT TO BRING MY PRIVATE JET?

No problem. We have years of experience working with private airports, handlers, pilots, and crew.

WHAT ABOUT TRAVEL AND HEALTH INSURANCE?

Adequate travel and emergency medical insurance is essential and is your responsibility. Check to see if your
credit card provider offers this service. We’ve found that many travellers enjoy the convenience of World
Nomads.

HOW DO YOU CHARGE FOR YOUR SERVICES?

Gray & Co. specializes in producing premium active travel experiences. Prices are based on multiple factors
such as number of travellers, degree of customization, etc. Most trips start at a minimum of $1500 per day per
person. A deposit is necessary upon booking and the balance is due 30 days before the trip.
