Voice Quality Testing (PESQ Algorithm)

• Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ) algorithm is defined by ITU-T

Recommendation P.862
• PESQ uses a model to compare the original signal with degraded version at the
output of the communications system (E.g. GSM, WCDMA)
• The result of comparing the reference and degraded signals is a quality score. This
score is analogous to the subjective Mean Opinion Score (MOS) measured using
panel tests according to ITU-T P.800.
• The PESQ scores are calibrated using a large database of subjective tests
• PESQ takes into account the following sources of signal degradation: coding
distortions, errors, packet loss, delay and variable delay, and filtering in analogue
network components
• PESQ considers signal degradation in the whole transmission chain, not only in air
interface
• PESQ does not take into account the subjective effect of level changes in the
network, echo, and the effect of round-trip delay on conversation

PESQ vs. Direct Quality Measurement

SQI…

• Speech quality index which is used for cellular network

• Based on radio link (RF) parameters, e.g. FER, BER, hand off situation, DTX
activity, etc which quantize the amount and type of distortion speech has been
subjected to during radio link transmission.
• No Special speech sample is required to be transmitted and compared
• Measurement is limited to receiving side of a link only
• Measurement is limited to air interface only, but not an end-to-end
measurement.

Voice Quality Testing (PESQ)

•”MOS Boxes” can be used as standalone units or as integrated to Nemo
Multi Rack

•Testing can be done to 1 or 2 directions

•Box 1 sends a Voice sample to Phone 1, Phone 2 receives it and sends to

Box 2, then Box 2 sends it to Nemo Outdoor, which calculates the MOS
