You have previously been in correspondence with X on some issues regarding the appointment of interims to
NI Water. X is on leave now, so I am responding on her behalf. I have highlighted your questions in red.

Can you please list the six NEDs and the respective categories under which each has been appointed to the
interim Board?

Firstly I should point out that there were only 5 interim appointments in total.
1. Padraic White under the NED1 “Chair” category.

2. Peter Bunting & Mairtin O’Muilleoir under the NED 2 “community confidence” category.

3. Kevin Steele under the NED 3 “commercial and business acumen” category.

4. Lawson McDonald under the NED 4 “public sector governance” category.

Were the seven principles of public appointments used in the selection of the candidates, in particular the
principle of diversity?

Of the six NEDs, how many would be classified as 'unionist' and how many 'nationalist'?

The Minister and the Panel were mindful of each of these principles in the selection of candidates. While I
could not directly answer how many would be classified as 'unionist' and how many as 'nationalist', any
political affiliations were noted in the relevant press releases at the time (see below):

The August 6 letter contained this statement on diversity:

Diversity
Currently, the make-up of the boards of our public bodies fails to reflect the make-up of our population. The
opportunity to appoint the best people is greatly increased when every potential applicant is attracted and
encouraged to apply and when individual differences are truly valued. Everyone involved in the public
appointments process has a duty to encourage a pool of applicants as diverse as the people of Northern
Ireland. By their actions throughout the public appointments process, Departments will demonstrate their
commitment to this principle.
