Art Therapy and Mental Health Annotated Bibliography

By Richard A. Friedman, M.D. To Treat Depression, Drugs or Therapy?

https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/01/08/to-treat-depression-drugs-or-therapy/

November 30, 2017

Friedman states that many experts thought that your clinician could literally pick any

antidepressant or type of psychotherapy at random because, with a few clinical exceptions, there

was little evidence to favor one treatment over another for a given patient. He gives statistics,

doctors names and discoveries they have made like Dr. Nemeroff’s study, about a third

experienced parental loss, and 45 percent suffering physical abuse and citing the National

Institute of Mental Health. This article talks about how easy it is to get hooked onto pills that

will alter your brain chemistry however in some cases talk and regular therapy can be very

beneficial. I believe this ties into my senior capstone by having an insight and being aware that

anyone can get antidepressants but will it work for the person? This can be a question each

individual can ask themselves and be able to determine which method and why it’s right for

them.

In this article, Mayo clinic professionals identifies the causes, effects and resources to treat the

different types of mental illness. The clinic uses credible data to show the readers that it is real

and not just made up (charts and list of illnesses). This article talks about the probable causes to

why individuals start to show symptoms, and treatments, it offers a list of many common mental

illnesses with a description and medication. I believe this article relates to my capstone by

understanding the basic probable causes of multiple mental disorders and how it affects millions

of individuals. This information is helpful by letting the readers be more aware of how much

mental illnesses is a big deal and find alternatives to cope.

November 30, 2017

The author Libby Nealis discusses how it’s important to have school based mental health

services and understanding the exposure to chronic environmental stressors like poverty, abuse,

and violence. Nealis uses statistics to make a point like stating that 1 in 5 kids/ adolescents suffer

from some type of mental illness and mentioning the ESSA and SISP.. The article describes how

the important it is to educate and support those who are struggling. For staff to be a helping hand

and to build a community and bond with the students. This connects to my senior project by

tying it to the place I spend most of my time going too. School. I think school has a big thing to

do with those who are experiencing symptoms and is “taboo” to talk about something as personal

get simple.

Barbara Ganim, Art Therapy,Applications- Benefits. April 2,2014

http://psychology.jrank.org/pages/45/Art-Therapy.html

November 29, 2017

The author Barbara Ganim states that art therapy, sometimes called expressive art or art

psychology, encourages self-discovery and emotional growth. It is a two-part process, involving

both the creation of art and the discovery of its meaning. In this article the author mentions well

known psychologist such as Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung's theories and beliefs and also

mentions Ambrose Tardieu and Paul-Max Simon for the studies they have published about

their findings that there were recurring themes and visual elements in the drawings of patients

with specific types of mental illness like abuse or recovering from trauma. The article’s main

points noted are that mental health professionals see art therapy as a very effective way to use as

a coping mechanism.Ganim explains that art therapy even helps with children that struggle with

communication and language skills, further down the article it gives the benefits of using art

therapy like improvement of relaxation, decreasement in stress, self discovery and most

importantly rehabilitation. This connects to my capstone by showing that art therapy has

impacted those struggling with disorder and illnesses, finding a better, more healthier way to be

treated.

Rehab Foundations Recovery.

November 28, 2017

Foundations and recovery center state that there are a variety of therapy sessions that a person

may be involved to be able to provide that person with various venues of expression and

healing. The Foundation and Recovery network is a rehabilitation page that helps gives options

to those seeking help but does mentions Margarita Tartakovsky.. In the article it talks about the

different types of art therapy like sculpting, painting, drawing, music, and more. This helps

connect to my capstone by giving a variety of options when going into art therapy to not only

those who struggle with mental illness but also reach out to those dealing with addiction.

Addiction is a big part of it because those who have addiction problems fall into those who

commit suicide or go insane.
