Introduction
Welcome!
Pop tabs, Boo-grams, and pumpkins, Oh My! The Iota Kappa (IK) chapter of Tau Beta Sigma (TBS) has
done a lot this semester! As an organization TBS strives to create a long-lasting bond through service,
dedication to music, and the recognition of women in the music community. You’ll be able to see
throughout the newsletter the bond that has formed between all of the sisters of Iota Kappa and the
shared desire to support the music organization that has brought us all together.

Band Camp at the Blue Ridge School

All of the sisters of IK are members of the Cavalier Marching Band (CMB), which is entering its
14th year after being restarted in the fall of 2003. All of the years before now band camp has taken
place at the Double Tree Hotel in Charlottesville, but this year there was a shake-up: band camp
would be at the Blue Ridge School, an all-boys boarding school in Blue Ridge, Virginia, about 40
minutes north of Cville. This meant that everything from the Hunter Smith Band Building (better known
as the HSBB) needed to be packed up and taken to the school. Members of TBS and our brother
organization, Kappa Kappa Psi (KKPsi), helped pack everything up the days before band camp and
unload at the school. Once everything was there and ready it was time for band camp to begin.

Many
members of IK are in
leadership positions
within the band, and
are required to arrive
a day early for band
camp. Not pictured
(Maria, Lexie, and
Kat) are our
members who are
part of the Uniform
Crew, the students in
charge of making
sure everyone has a
fitting uniform. They
were fitting band
members as they
checked in for band
camp. Other leadership positions IK members are a part of are Section Leaders (Brittany and Vivian),
Drill Instructors (Alex and Leah), Equipment Crew (Anthony and Louis), and Librarian (Jessica). Also
there is Summer, who works in the director’s office, but arrived late because she was finishing her
internship with the National Cancer Institute (all of IK is very proud).

Several sweaty days, ‘mandatory fun’ filled nights, and sunburns later: band camp was over,
but the work was not done. The members of IK and BX worked together after band camp ended to
help tear down all of the equipment and pack up everything onto trucks so that it could be taken
back to the band building and subsequently unpacked. The brothers and sisters were released hours
later, bodies sore and minds thinking of their showers and beds at home. (Alex and Brittany went to
Cookout because it was 2 o’clock in the morning and there was a need for milkshakes)

Philanthropy and Fund Raising

Pop Tab Competition
A popular philanthropy activity that TBS runs is the pop tab competition. This is a competition
between the different band sections to see who can collect the most pop tabs (the little metal doo-
dads from the top of soda cans) and the winning section receives a pizza party. The pop tabs are
then donated to the Ronald McDonald House. The competition runs for about a month, early in the
season, with tubs left out in the band building after every practice to collect the tabs. At the end of
the month the
winner of the
competition was
overwhelmingly
the saxophone
section. As can
be seen from the
picture the pop
tabs from the
saxophones (left)
are more than all
of the other
sections
combined (right).

Boo-grams
Although the CMB did not have a Halloween show this year the TBS Boo-grams were still a very
successful fundraiser. The Boo-grams consisted of candy and a handwritten message of the buyer’s
choosing which were then delivered to the designated recipients between the morning practice
and leaving for the stadium at the last football game in October. Each Boo-gram was $2 and the
CMB ordered over 200 of them! A bunch of members got together after practice one day to write
out all of the notes, and then they were assembled the next day.

Iota Kappa Goes Places

Visiting Eta Rho
Eta Rho (HP) at James
Madison University is Iota
Kappa’s big sister
chapter. They helped
install IK at UVA and we
have remained in close
contact ever since. One
of their members, Katie
Peirce, used to be a
member of Iota Kappa.
We were sad to see her
go, but she is enjoying
her time at James
Madison and being a
sister of Eta Rho.

Visiting Iota Lambda

Iota Kappa loves visiting with other chapters when the CMB travels to away games. This year UVA
played North Carolina at Chapel Hill and so Iota Kappa was able to meet Iota Lambda! Pretty cool
getting to meet sisters from the chapter that was installed right after ours.

320 All In
CMB Pumpkin Carving
Every year BX and IK team up to put
on a pumpkin carving contest for
the CMB, where each section puts
their creativity to the test to see who
can carve the pumpkin the judges
will like best. The pumpkins are cut
open and hollowed out the day
before by BX and IK, so that all the
creative carvers have to do is make
a cool design in the 45 minutes
before practice starts. This year the
baritone section had the best
pumpkin with an impressive carving
of Cav Man charging past on his
horse.

Mr. and Ms. Cavalier

The Friday practices before games are known
as spirit practices. Band members are
encouraged to go all out with the orange,
blue, and general spirit wear. The biggest spirit
practice is the one before the last game of
the season, at which the Mr. and Ms. Cavalier
awards are given out to the two most spirited
band members. This year the winners were a
pair dressed as Cav Man and his horse.

Painting Beta Bridge

An IK tradition is painting Beta Bridge (a UVA landmark that anyone can paint on to make statements
or announcments) to congradualate the CMB fourth years for making it through to the end of their
marching career with the Cavalier Marching Band (until they come back for alumni band, that is).

Women in the Band Luncheon

The mission statement of Tau Beta Sigma is “We provide exceptional service to collegiate
bands and promote equality and diversity, including empowering women in the band profession. We
cultivate leadership, educational achievement, music appreciation, and community development.”
Iota Kappa works toward this mission statement with our annual Women in the Band Luncheon.

Held this year on November

18th, the luncheon recognizes and
promotes women who have
impacted and been impacted by
music in their life. This year the
speaker was Dean Elizabeth
Ozment, from UVA’s College of Arts
and Sciences. Ms. Ozment has
degrees in music performance,
music education, and women’s
studies, and before becoming an
associate dean at UVA she taught
music at numerous colleges and
universities. She also served on the Society for
Ethnomusicology Council, as media review
editor for the Society for American Music
Bulletin, and as secretary of the Society for
Ethnomusicology gender and sexualities
taskforce. Ms. Ozment was a very engaging
speaker and we were lucky to have her speak
at our event.

Iota Kappa holds this luncheon in order

to showcase women who have made great
strides in the music profession and for whom
music has greatly impacted their lives. The goal
of the luncheon is to show young women that it
is possible to succeed and thrive in a music
profession by providing them strong role models
within an industry that is largely dominate by men. The aspect of promoting women within the band
profession is a very integral part to both Tau Beta Sigma and Iota Kappa, and hopefully we will be
able to expand the event in the future.

With My Sisters I am Best

Beyond providing service to the CMB and working towards the promotion of women within
music and the community, joining TBS and IK has created a bond between all of the sisters, and we
enjoy each other’s company and spending time together. These pictures showcase some of the
social activities we hold as a chapter to help promote sisterhood and friendship.

Alumni regularly come back to UVA for

events and football games, and IK is always happy
to see them return. We also hold a dinner on
Homecoming weekend for all the alumni that come
back.

As you can see Kat really missed Steven (who

graduated last year)

Each year IK does Secret Sister

(basically Secret Santa) where three
sets of gifts are given increasing from
a price limit of $5 to $10 to $15. We
finish up Secret Sister with a small
holiday party where the last gifts are
exchanged and we all try and guess
who our secret sister is.

The symbol for Iota Kappa is

the phoenix, and so meet
Squaa, our mascot. We
thought he was going to be
the size of a softball but he
turned out to be much
bigger. He likes to travel,
though, and so the members
of IK will take him on
adventures; he also travels to
precincts and districts with us,
where he has built a little bit
of a reputation with other
chapters, who love to take
photos with him.

Our President, Kat, had the fantastic idea of

jazzing up a workshop on the 5 & 8 with pumpkin
painting, and so each pumpkin was decorated
to represent one of the 5 & 8 while we discussed
our views and interpretations of them.
