 St Charalambos
THE GREAT HOLY HIEROMARTYR OF MAGNESIA, THESSALY

St Charalambos is one of our most wonderful Hieromartyrs, who lived to a very old
age in the city of Magnesia in Thessaly during the late second and early third

century. He was 113 years of age when he was martyred.
Emperor Severos had appointed Lucian as Governor of the territory of Magnesia
where St Charalambos served as Christian Priest and Bishop, who had
infuriated the Roman authorities because he converted so many pagans to
our Faith.
Governor Lucian immediately ordered St Charalambos to be arrested and forced We must Love sinners, but hate their deeds.

As expected, this elderly Saint was then subjected to the brutal tortures of the
Roman executioners, who scourged him with whips, and then ripped his skin so that we ourselves do not fall into the temptation
to shreds with iron claws, yet he stood firm in his Faith and showed no hatred
in which they abide...
nor malice towards his persecutors.
St Charalambos suffered terribly for his unwavering Faith in God. He was beaten, We must not be angry with anyone
burnt, dragged through the streets, crucified...
Despite his indescribable suffering, St Charalambos gave thanks to our Lord, and and we must never hate anyone –
his Spiritual Strength amazed and even shocked the torturers and those who neither for their faith,
witnessed the unspeakable brutality imposed upon such an aged, humble
and faithful Hierarch. nor for their shameful deeds...

fierce Roman Commander, Lucius, knelt before St Charalambos, begged his
forgiveness, repented his sins and asked to be Baptised.
Superstitious fear spread throughout the pagan city. People repented their sins
and begged for Mercy from the All Powerful and Mighty God Whom St
Charalambos professed. Many sought Holy Baptism and Life in Christ.
Governor Lucian stopped persecuting the Christians until he could report to
Emperor Severos.
Meanwhile, St Charalambos, having been set free, continued to perform many
Divine Miracles such as healing the sick and the lame, granting sight to the
blind, and even raising some from the dead.
The whole region came to believe in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Emperor Septimos Severos was in Pisidian, Antioch, when he heard what had
occurred. He was outraged and sent three hundred troops to arrest St

Charalambos, to drive a spike into his spine and then drag him from
Magnesia all the way to Antioch.
The executioners followed his orders, and also twisted St Charalambos’ beard into
a rope, which they wound around his neck and used to drag him along the
road.
When St Charalambos was presented before Emperor Severos, he was sentenced
to further hideous tortures. A skewer pierced his chest and he was suspended
over a fire.
The Emperor's daughter, Galina, was among the witnesses of this excruciating
torture, and being unable to bear seeing such an aged and good man being
brutalised, she begged for forgiveness from St Charalambos and asked to be
received into Christianity. The fire died out and St Charalambos was
unharmed.
All those who were present were converted except for Emperor Severos and the
Prefect, Crispus, who were intensely angered, frustrated and threatened.
Crispus tried to persuade the Emperor to immediately execute St
Charalambos, who continued to reject the pagan gods.
Once again, St Charalambos was subjected to torture: his face was smashed with
stones, and they tried to set his beard ablaze but as they approached with
torches, the flames leapt forth and burnt the executioners.
After 30 days, the Emperor again summoned St Charalambos, demanding that he
honour the pagan gods and renounce Christ – but he steadfastly refused to do
so.
The executioners forced a horse's bit into St Charalambos' mouth and shod his feet
with nailed boots, as if he were an irrational beast, but despite the desperate
pleas of the Emperor’s daughter, Galina, St Charalambos was paraded
through the streets like a beast of burden.
Galina was relentless in her quest to save the Holy Hierarch – so when her father
asked her whether she still worshipped the idols or not, she told him that she
did, whereupon, he released St Charalambos into her care, elated that his
daughter had forsaken the God of St Charalambos – and hoping that she
would be able to persuade the Holy Hieromartyr to renounce Christ and his
Faith, and worship their pagan idols.
Galina duly took St Charalambos to the temple, and when he remained silent, she
loudly challenged the gods and mocked their impotence, and taking hold of a
statue of Apollo, she smashed it on the ground along with 34 other stone idols.
Emperor Severos was aghast at the deception of his daughter, and immediately
ordered the idols to be rebuilt that very night so that the Galileans would not
mock him, and he instructed the workers to tell everyone that they had ‘risen
from the dead.’
However, Galina again destroyed them, which infuriated the Emperor, yet he
could not bring himself to subject her to severe punishment.
Instead, he tried to corrupt St Charalambos by assigning him to a widow, thinking
that she would seduce and humiliate him. By the Grace of God, not only did St
Charalambos remain uncorrupted, unhumiliated and unashamed, but he
also worked many Miracles that caused the wicked widow and many others to
Repent their ways and to convert to Christianity.
The frustrated Emperor decided to examine the Miraculous Abilities of the
Almighty God of St Charalambos, so someone who had been tormented by a
demon for 36 years was presented to the court to see whether St Charalambos
could exorcise the demon.
To the utter incredulity of Emperor Severos, the person was Healed, whereupon he
spontaneously exclaimed: "Great is the God of the Christians!"
Then a young man who had been dead for three days was brought in and he
was Resurrected by God through the Intercessory Prayers of St Charalambos.
