Use the concept of temperature coefficient of resistance with raise of temperature; calculate the

resistance of the wire.

Let lo , Ao are the length and area of cross section of the wire at temperature To . Let l , A are the
length and area of cross section of the wire at temperature T .If 'a ', is the temperature co-
efficient of resistivity and a 1 is the coefficient of linear expansion.

Final length of the wire with raise of temperature is,

l = l0 ( 1 + a 1 ( T - T0 ) )

Final cross-sectional area of the wire with raise of temperature is,

A = A0 ( 1 + 2a 1 ( T - T0 ) )

Resistivity with raise of temperature is,

r = ro ( 1 + a ( T - To ) )

Resistance of the wire at temperature T0 is expressed follows.

l0
R0 = r 0
A0
If the resistance at temperature To is Ro , then the resistance can be calculated as follows .

R=r
A

Substitute r = r o ( 1 + a ( T - To ) ) , l = l0 1 + a ( T - T0 ) and r = ro ( 1 + a ( T - To ) ) .
