When
the force is increased from 500 lb to 1800 lb the specimen elongates 0.009 in.
(a) Determine the modulus of elasticity (ksi) for the material if it remains linear elastic.
(b) What is the strain developed in the specimen in in/ft?
(c) What is the stress in the specimen as it elongates 0.009 in? Express the answer in psi.
PROBLEM 2. A bar having a length of 5 in. and cross-sectional area of 0.7 is subjected to an axial force of 8000 lb. If
the bar stretches 0.002 in., determine the modulus of elasticity of the material. The material has linear-elastic
behavior.
PROBLEM 3. The acrylic plastic rod is 200 mm long and 15 mm in diameter. If an axial load of 300 N is applied to it,
determine the change in its length and the change in its diameter. Ep = 2.70 GPa, νp = 0.4.
PROBLEM 5. A heavy object is being raised from the sea floor by a tug equipped with a crane and winch. The steel
cable has an effective modulus of elasticity equzl to 140 GPa and the load produces a stress in the cable equal to 290
MPa. If the loaded part of the cable is 90 m long,
(a) how much does the cable stretch when the load is picked up? Express the answer in millimetres.
(b) What is the strain developed in the cable? Express the answer in mm/m.
PROBLEM 6. A solid circular steel rod 6 mm in diameter and 500 mm long is rigidly fastened to the end of a square
brass bar 25 mm on a side and 400 mm long, the geometric axes of the bars lying along the same line. An axial
tensile force of 5 kN is applied at each of the extreme ends. Determine
(a) the deformation of the steel rod in mm
(b) the deformation oig the brass bar in mm.
(c) total elongation of the assembly
For steel, E= 200 GPa, and for brass, E= 90 GPa
