competition and a fourteen-year-old school boy
was the winner. Each symbol on the flag has a
special meaning for Australians.
The British Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II,
is the Royal Head of Australia but has no
real power in the government and serves
as a symbolic Head of State.

Australia is the only country occupying a whole
continent in the word and it´s the 6thth largest one.
The Commonwealth of Australia - comprises 6 states
and 2 territories. The States are New South Wales,
Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia
- the largest one- and Tasmania, which is an island and
the smallest one. The Territories are the Australian
Capital Territory and the Northern Territory.
The first Australians were Aborigines. The
“outback” is their traditional home, but today
they live in town and cities. The country´s
original inhabitants suffered great hardships
with the arrival of the modern settlers. Their
flag symbolizes Aboriginal identity - yellow
represents the sun, giver of life, red represents
the red earth and relationship to the land and
black represents Aboriginal people.
