Assignment 1

1. The vapour pressure, p, of nitric acid varies with temperature as follows:

T /oC 0 20 40 50 70 80 90 100

p /kPa 1.92 6.38 17.7 27.7 62.3 89.3 124.9 170.9

What are the normal boiling point and the enthalpy of vaporization of nitric acid if we assume ideal gas behaviour and
that the molar volume of the liquid is insignificant?

2. Do problem 4.4 (9th edition) which is problem 4B.4 (10th edition).

3. The best assignment question yet! Carefully read the partial molar volume section 5A.1 a (pg 181 – 182) 10th ed. Or
9th edition pgs (157 – 158). I have extended data points of the fig 5.1 graph; partial molar volume of water and ethanol
vs. mole fraction of ethanol. You question is to use it to create the corresponding total volume vs. moles of ethanol
where you have 1002 ml of pure water to start with. i.e. when mole fraction of ethanol is zero all you have is 1002 ml of
water….then you start adding amounts of ethanol….

Make sure you understand that the fig. 5.1 graph (if you first switch it’s x-axis into moles of ethanol based off off
the 1002 ml water) is the slopes from a total volume vs. moles of ethanol graph.

4. At 30.0 K, the partial vapour pressures of HCl(that is, the partial pressure of the HCl vapour) in liquid GeCl4 are as
follows:

xHCl 0.005 0.012 0.019

pHCl/kPa 32.0 76.9 121.8

Calculate Henry’s law constant. How well does the system follow Henry’s Law?

5. The molar mass of an enzyme was determined by dissolving it in water, measuring the osmotic pressure at 20.0oC,
and extrapolating the data to zero concentration. The following data were obtained:

c/(mg cm-3) 3.221 4.618 5.112 6.722

h/cm 5.746 8.238 9.119 11.990

Find the molar mass of the enzyme.

6. The following temperature/composition data were obtained for a mixture of octane (O) and methylbenzene (M) at
1.00 atm, where x is the mole fraction in the liquid and y the mole fraction in the vapour at equilibrium.

T/oC 110.9 112.0 114.0 115.8 117.3 119.0 121.0 123.0

xM 0.908 0.795 0.615 0.527 0.408 0.300 0.203 0.097

yM 0.923 0.836 0.698 0.624 0.527 0.410 0.297 0.164

The boiling points are 110.6 oC and 125.6oC for M and O respectively. Plot the temperature/composition
diagram for the mixture. What is the composition of the vapour in equilibrium with the liquid of composition a) xM =
0.250 and b) xO = 0.250?
