I T has been said by people who have not visited Netherlands India,
L that in publications it is made more beautiful than it really is, and
it has even been doubted whether the wonderful illustrations published
are made from actual photographs.
More often, however, most fastidious travellers, who have visited
Netherlands India, are heard to say that the enchanting scenery excells
all illustrations ever published, and that the actuality can only be repre-

sented by the paintings of world famous artists. The facts prove that this
opinion is the right one.
Nearly all world cruises made during the last years included a
visit to Netherlands India in their programme, and the "Call of the
East" is also becoming stronger and stronger amongst private tourists.
The nurnber of tourists visiting Bali, is nearly three times as large as
five years ago, and a great many travellers make a side-trip from Manila,

For every sort of tourist Netherlands India offers attractions.
Whether he is interested in scenery, native life, agricultural development,
ancient temples, tropical plants, orchids or the tropical fauna, he will
find unique examples here.
For those who really love to admire tropical beauty there is no
land in the world like Netherlands India and it is to them that the
K.N.I.L.M. caters in a very special way.

the map shows, Netherlands India can be approached in
many different ways. Travellers coming from Europe will have as
their first port of call either Medan in North Sumatra or Singapore.
From MEDAN a K.N.I.L.M. plane leaves every week for Batavia.
the central airport of Netherlands India, where all lines connect. The
distance Medan-Batavia of 1100 miles is covered in 8l/2 9 hours
flying with intermediate landings at Pakan Baroe and Palembang.
PAKAN BAROE is the gateway to the much favoured tourist
resorls in the Padang Highlands in Middle Sumatra, such as Padang
and Fort de Koek, which are within half a day's journey by motorcar.
Pakan Baroe is situated in the middle of the jungle and is an excellent
spot from which to arrange big game hunting parties. Even the landing
field has been visited by tigers occasionally.
After arriving in Batavia it is possible to fly on next morning and
reach any part of Java that it may be desired to visit within the day.
In case the tourist disembarks at SINGAPORE the K.N.I.L.M.
will carry him from there to Batavia within 6 hours, with a rest of

half-an-hour in Palembang in South Sumatra. For visitors to Bali a
rapid through connection exists at Sourabaya with the K.P.M, steamers
(sec Itinerary No. 1 page 27), or extra aeroplanes can bc hired.
Visitors travelling via Hongkong may avail themselves of the
direct steamship connection of the Java China Japan Line from Hong-
kong to BAT'AVIA and have on arrival in the principal airport all
airlines at their disposal.
SEMARANG and SOURABAYA can be reached in a few hours
flying. Twice daily a triple engined Fokker leaves for the "garden city
in the Hills" BANDOENG. The flight from Batavia to Bandoeng is one
of the most charming trips that can be made. It takes only 45 minutes
and gives a most interesting panorama of the gradual change of the
typical Java lowland into kill country and highland. (sec Itinerary No. 3
page 28).
Bandoeng is situated on a magnificent plateau among the Preanger
Mountains, 2300 feet above sea level. It is the gateway to places like
Garoet, Lembang and many other famous beauty spots.
Tourists travelling via Manila and those coming from Australia
will arrive in the principal port of East-Java SOURABAYA; thence the

K.N.I.L.M. is ready to convey them daily to Batavia with a through
connection to Bandoeng on the same day.
An early service is operated from Sourabaya and Semarang on
Wednesdays connecting with the mailsteamers leaving Batavia at noon
and with the K.L.M, aeroplanes bound for Europe which leave Batavia
at 11 a.m. via Singapore.
If it is preferred, the journey to Batavia may be broken at
SEMARANG whence very pleasant excursions can be made to the
surrounding mountains and to Djokjakarta and the Borobudur.
Travellers who are anxious to make eonnections with homeward
bonnd steamers may either continue their air-voyage from Batavia to
Singapore, where all the principal steamship lines connect, or proceed
by K.N.I.L.M. to Medan. In the latter port the air service connects with
the modern Netherlands steamship services leaving Medan for Europe
on the day of arrival of the K.N.I.L.M. plane.
On all lines stop-over privileges may be exercised.
If it is desired to reach Europe still sooner, passage may be booked
by the K.L.M. (Royal Dutch Airlines), which operates a weekly air service
Batavia-Europe. This service covers the distance of 9000 miles in
8 — 10 days and is the longest airline in the world. The route runs via
Singapore — Bangkok — Calcutta — Karachi — Bagdad — Cairo —

— Athens — Sofia — (in the winter season via Rome Marseilles —
Paris) to Amsterdam.
