Foreword

I congratulate members of the Construction Standards Committee of the Construction Advisory Board on their success in compiling the First Edition of the English - Chinese Glossary of Terms Commonly Used in the Hong Kong Construction Industry.

The Glossary contains some 5,000 English construction terms with their corresponding Chinese equivalents. It serves to provide a quick reference to the local construction industry for facilitating understanding of terms commonly used in the industry. The Glossary will be continuously updated. Suggestions are welcome and can be addressed to the Construction Standards Committee using the Form at Appendix I.

The Construction Standards Committee advises the Government through the Construction Advisory Board on construction standards. Members of the Committee comprise representatives from government departments and major construction related professional institutions and trade associations. The Works Bureau provides secretariat service to the Committee. The Terms of Reference and Membership of the Committee are at Appendix n and IK respectively.

The compilation of the Glossary started in end 1995. The first edition is now completed. The Glossary will shortly be available on Internet through the Works Bureau Homepage. The Glossary contains specific construction terms commonly used in the local construction industry. Legislative and administrative terms are however excluded. As there are different Chinese equivalents for different areas of application within the construction industry, only those Chinese equivalents considered to be commonly used are included in this Glossary. Readers may need to make necessary adjustments to the Chinese equivalents in their own areas of application.

I would like to thank members of the Committee for their concerted effort in compiling the Glossary.
