Lab Report #5 – Determination of the Net Rate of Osmosis and Diffusion

Part A: Osmosis Determination

1. Record lab findings in the chart below. (3 marks)

2. Plot a graph of time (minutes) on the X-axis and % Brix on the Y-axis for each of the beakers.

3. Answer the following questions regarding beaker #1:

a. Using your graph, determine the time it will take for the solution to reach equilibrium (if it
weren’t forced). (1 mark)
It would take the solution around 20-21 minutes to reach equilibrium

b. Did you observe a change in the weight of the dialysis tube that was inserted into this
beaker? If so, explain why there was a change. (1 mark)
The weight increased, the solution turned blue and got denser.

c. Which type of solution (hypotonic, isotonic, hypertonic) was in this beaker? (1 mark)
There was a hypertonic Solution in the beaker
4. Answer the following questions regarding beaker #2:

a) Did you observe a change in the weight of the dialysis tube that was inserted into this beaker?
If so, explain why there was a change. (1 mark)
Click or tap here to enter text.

b) If a living human cell were submerged into this beaker instead of the dialysis tubing, what
would the effect on that cell be over time? (1 mark)
The cell would eventually die.

c) Which type of solution (hypotonic, isotonic or hypertonic) was in this beaker? (1 mark)
There was a Isotonic Solution in the beaker

Part B: Diffusion Determination

5. Complete the chart on diffusion from the lab. (1 mark)

beakers (they can be on the same graph). (3 marks)

7. Compare the size of iodine and starch molecules and explain your answer based on your
experimental observations. (2 marks)
Iodine molecules are smaller then starch. Disaccharides like starch are too large to diffuse through
the membrane.
