CHANGING THE SCRIPT

Level:​ Pre-Intermediate
Goal: ​Students will be able to develop fluent communication strategies, creating a
coherent narration using the game selected words, developing improvisation ability
and creativity.
Length: ​30-40 minutes
Material: ​Cards with printed words
Step 1: ​Ask students to sit in a circle.
Step 2:​ Tell a story in class.
Step 3​: Say to students that they they will retell the story that have known, but some
changes will have to be made in the plot, creating a parody. Is possible to use a
short story, a summary of a movie, and many other options.
Step 4: Explain to students that a student will start the storytelling, and during this,
the teacher will show a card on which a random word will be written. Then the
student will have to continue the storytelling in some coherent way, fitting the shown
word in the plot. After, the next student will continue the storytelling and at one point
he will also get a random word to fit into his speech.
So, successively, the task will continue until all students participate.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Level: ​Upper-Intermediate
Goal: ​Students will be able to develop fluent communication strategies, improve
speaking skills, discuss and expose their opinions about controversial issues;
Length:​ 30-45 minutes
Material: ​Cards with the situations
Step 1: ​Explain to the students that various controversial situations from day to day
will be described - as cases of prejudice, violence and intolerance - and the students
will be put to the test, having to answer what they would do in front of the described
scenes.
Step 2: Each student will raffle a card that contains a situation and will be challenged
to make an urgent decision in the face of the controversial situation, having to speak
what he or she would do.
Would you interfere or not? Would you argue with a stranger or move on without
taking sides?
​So, successively, the task will continue until all students participate.

1. Gay couple is reprimanded for dating in shopping mall


In the food court of a busy mall a gay couple are sitting exchanging hugs, shaking
hands, making affectionate statements and kisses on the cheek while they wait for
their lunch. There is another boy on the premises and asks the couple to stop
hugging because they are disturbing the people who are in that place, the boy
complains that the couple is disrespecting the children, the families and all the
people who are in that place. The couple defends themselves by saying that they
are not doing anything too much, that they were just there together like any other
couple. The discussion increases and the man starts to insult the gay couple
demonstrating much prejudice. What would you do in this situation?

2. Mother curses and humiliates daughter at the mall


You are in a food court of a very busy mall. In this same place there is a mother
having lunch with her daughter and suddenly they begin to argue. The girl is fat
and wants to eat hamburger and fries, but the mother starts yelling at the girl,
saying that she is very fat and that she feels ashamed to have such an ugly and
fat daughter. Then the girl starts to cry, saying that she likes to eat potatoes
because it is good, and the mother screams more and more, saying that she does
not find clothes for her daughter in children's stores because she is very fat and
that she should be ashamed of be like this.
The girl cries a lot and asks what is the problem with eating what she likes, and
the mother says that the problem is the shame she feels of having a fat daughter
who eats too much.
You watch the whole scene and then: What would you do?

3. Woman is harassed in the street


A woman is walking on the street, and suddenly she carries a coarse singsong.
How many women have not gone through this situation?
Imagine this scene happening right in front of you. What would you do?

4. Dad does not accept his daughter's black boyfriend.


In a food court in a mall, a girl (the daughter) introduces her boyfriend to her
father. He does not take the prejudice clearly, does not say that the problem is the
kid's skin color, but he acts like a lot of people do. How can an attitude of prejudice
affect you? What would you do?
5. Parking in the exclusive vacancy of seniors
The situation now is as follows: there is the vacancy: exclusive for seniors! But a
woman who is not old at all decides to park. While she's setting the car, a little lad
arrives, demanding the place for him. What would you do in this situation?

6. Rebel son at the mall


It is common for children to try to challenge the boundaries of their parents. The
scene is in the mall, the son is 11 years old and the mother asks him to go with her
in the bank and then go to lunch. The boy refuses, and begins to shout saying that
the mother does not know to do anything right, and says that prefers to go to live
with the father, because he knows to take care of him better than the mother. In
addition, the boy screams and says that the mother is boring. The mother
uncontrollably takes the boy by the arm and starts yelling at him and asks the boy
to stop fighting because all the people are watching. The situation seems to be out
of control. All the people at the mall are looking. What would do?

7. An elderly woman being mistreated by a caregiver in the middle of the


public square
Unfortunately at senior age many seniors need the help of caregivers. The scene
takes place in a public square, a caretaker and a very old gentleman, visibly
debilitated.
The woman spends all her time on the phone and leaves the elderly man standing
in the wheelchair under a very strong sun. The moment he calls her to tell her that
she needs to go to the bathroom and asks to go home, the woman starts cursing
and hits him. And you? What you would do?

8. Poor boy asks for a book


You are hurrying to your work and passing in front of a bookstore where a poor
boy comes to you and asks the following question: "Can you buy a book for me? It
can be very cheap, it will be very fast, because I'd like to read. " What would you
do?
9. Aggression to a beggar
Imagine a common square in a big city. There is a beggar near the bench and a
group of four young men approach the beggar and start swearing that he should
go to work and punch and kick the man, sending him away from the square. You
go through the square and see this scene. What would you do?

10. Puppy stuck in the sun


A puppy is walking with his owner at the edge of a pond, but the owner is out of
control, he has lost his patience and begins to mistreat the animal.
The man loses control and holds the puppy on a pole, and begins to kick the
animal while cursing and screams that will leave him there alone. The dog owner
is an insensitive man who wants to throw his own dog out.
What would you do?
