ADVANCED PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROL
(ADVANCED PLC)

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Designed to further develop participants' programming skills, the course aims to improve
their ability to convert control tasks to fully operational systems.

The course continues on from the 'Introduction to PLCs’ course, with the development of
more complex control problems.

Additional functions such as timers and counters are used with sequential controls, and
conditional programs plus manual, auto and reset control functions.

A strong emphasis is placed on safety and appropriate work practices throughout the
course, especially during the practical sessions.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Analyze control tasks


• Understand and utilise timers, counters, flags and registers
• Sequential controls
• Program manual and auto modes
• Emergency stop and reset functions
• Modify PLC programs
• Generating program documentation
• Test and monitor PLC applications using PLC test systems

ELECTROPNEUMATIC CONTROLS

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course deals with the control of pneumatics actuators using pneumatics and electrical
sensing and switching devices. Electrical principles are covered at a basic level, but some
previous knowledge of pneumatic equipment is required.

Both functions and operation of switches, relays, and solenoid operated valves and
proximity sensors are included and participants put theory into practice through practical
hands-on exercises.

A strong emphasis is placed on safety and appropriate working practices throughout the
course, especially during the practical sessions.
The hands-on training provided to participants includes the simulation of electro-
pneumatic controls typical in industrial applications.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:
1. Define terms used in various electric and pneumatic components;
2. Design Electropneumatic schematic and connection diagrams according to
description of operating sequence;

INDUSTRIAL HYDRAULICS

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course deals with the fundamental concepts related to the control of hydraulics
equipment. It covers the knowledge of the physical laws and relevant standards and units,
the technical terms and their definitions, as well as the design and principles of operation
of the different basic hydraulics control elements. Laboratory practice includes
simulations of hydraulics control circuits.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:
1. Explain the physical principles and laws of hydraulics;
2. Describe laminar and turbulent flow and their effects
3. Read the symbols, design and functions of hydraulics power unit and other basic
controls and working elements;
4. Interpret basic hydraulics schematic diagrams according to ISO standard;
5. Construct basic hydraulics circuits;
6. Show awareness of safety precautions in constructing, operating and maintaining
hydraulic systems.

INDUSTRIAL COMMUNICATION

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course is designed to equip participants with knowledge on Fieldbus technology.
Participants will be exposed to design, configuration, commissioning and
troubleshooting in networked automation systems.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, participants should be able to;
1. Describe the general function and application of Fieldbus systems.
2. Describe the advantages of bus systems and compared to conventional
wiring.
3. Describe the ISO/OSI model and network topologies of Fieldbus system.
4. Identify the structure of factory network systems
5. Setup a system link via MPI and Profibus with PLCs
6. Program control functions in a Profibus-DP networked system.
7. Detect and eliminate faults during commissioning.

PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLS (PLC)

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course deals with the principles of control systems engineering and introduction to
the characteristics and features of programmable logic controls. Problem exercises are
intensively given.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:
1. Identify and explain the advantages of a programmable logic control compared to
conventional controls
2. Operate programmable logic controller and personal computers
3. Identify and describe the functions of the system components of a programmable
logic control;
4. Make a simple program in ladder diagram, statement list and function block diagram

PNEUMATICS

Course Description
This course is designed to equip the students with the fundamental concepts in
pneumatics and the students must be able to design, implement, and maintain
pneumatics circuits.

Course Objectives
At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
 Discuss the physical quantities used in pneumatic systems;
 Explain the physical properties and laws of air;
 Explain the symbols, design and principles of operation of different pneumatic
elements;
 Demonstrate understanding of the construction and function of pneumatic
controls and elements;
 Interpret basic pneumatic schematic diagrams in accordance with ISO standards;
 Develop the basic functional sequence representation as an aid in designing
pneumatic circuit diagrams;
 Construct the basic pneumatic control circuits on simulation panel;
 Recognize and correct faults in pneumatic installation;
 Demonstrate awareness of the importance of safety precautions in constructing
pneumatic circuits.

PROCESS CONTROL AND VISUALISATION

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course exposes its participants to technologies involved in process automation,
using programmable logic controllers and computer based visualization software.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

1. Describe the role of PLC’s and HMI in process automation


2. Describe the function of tags
3. Write program for 2-step control
4. Write program for continuous control for level, flow, pressure, temperature,
etc.
5. Setup a simple process visualization converting a personal computer to HMI

PROCESS CONTROL

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to expose participants to the fundamentals of process
controls. The course involves classroom discussions, working with simulation
software and practical exercises on a process control work station.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course, participants should be able to:
1. Explain closed-loop controls
2. Read piping and instrumentation (P&I) diagrams
3. Explain measurement and control of process variables such as temperature,
flow, level and pressure
Explain the operation, characteristics and configuration of PID controls

SENSOR TECHNOLOGY

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is to provide trainees with practical working knowledge of sensors, what
issues limits their use and how to select sensors for various applications.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:
1. Describe principle of operations of sensors

2. Describe detecting and control functions of sensors

3. Classify sensors

4. Identify the various types of sensors and their associated symbols

5. Describe the power supply configuration of common proximity sensors.

INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is a project driven hands-on practical based course that provides first-hand
knowledge of Industrial application of electronics to beginners, technical practitioners,
and engineers alike. The program covers three major topics: Basic Electricity, Electronics
Instruments, and Semiconductor Devices such as Diodes, Transistors, Thyristors and Linear
ICs. By building at least two meaningful electronics projects during the course, the
participants are taught the basic skills they need on the job such as: component
identification and testing, understanding circuit symbols and circuit diagrams, high
reliability soldering, use of measuring instruments and troubleshooting (faultfinding) and
repair techniques both at the system level and at the component level. The aim is to build
up their confidence in the use of electronic equipment and components. The topics
covered coincide with core topics of the City and Guilds Syllabus in Electronics at the
certificate and diploma level.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:
1. Identify basic electronic components (both passive and active), understand their
functions and how to test them
2. Understand and apply basic circuit theorems in the design, building, troubleshooting
and repair of basic electrical and electronic circuits.
3. Properly use electronic instruments for measuring and testing circuits and
components.
4. Display safety consciousness in the application of acquired knowledge and skills.

INDUSTRIAL MOTOR CONTROLS

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course deals with the principles of operation, construction, circuit connection, and
characteristics of AC motor controllers. Starting with fundamentals, it proceeds step by
step, through all the basic kinds of controls the participant-trainee will encounter in the
industry. It explains what kinds of controls are available, how they operate, where they
are used and why they are designed to operate as they do. The control sequence involves
operations such as starting and stopping, braking, reversing or regulating motor current,
torque and acceleration, and sequential motor control.

The workshop practice consists of preparing schematic and connection diagrams, circuit
wiring and installations, maintenance and repair of various industrial motor controllers
available in the workshop. Laboratory experiments are provided to achieve practical
understanding and application of the theoretical knowledge acquired from lectures.
Laboratory exercises promote quality workmanship and safety consciousness through
strict compliance to Nigerian Electrical Code provisions and safety regulations.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course, the participants should be able to:
1. Discuss the operation of motor control circuits for starting, reversing, limiting the
speed, timing motor drives, regulating motor current, torque and acceleration, and
sequential motor control;
2. Illustrate typical industrial motor circuits by schematic and connection diagrams;
3. Wire up motor controllers designed to perform operations such as connection
diagrams;
4. Use systematic and safe procedures in troubleshooting motor control components
and circuits;
5. Select and use proper type of test equipment for particular troubleshooting.

VARIABLE SPEED DRIVES
(AC INVERTERS)

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides participant with fundamental working principles of variable speed
drives. Using practical hands-on exercises on VSD, the participants learn how to select,
install, program, maintain, or troubleshoot variable speed drives.
Participants will also become familiar with the drive's Human Machine Interface (HMI),
which allows programmers, maintainers, and trouble-shooters access information stored
within the drive.

At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:
1. Select Appropriate Variable Speed Drives for a given Application
2. Match Motors to VSD
3. Identify and Correct Drives System Problems

ELECTRICAL MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course deals with the identification and interpretation of electrical and control
blueprints. A complete overview of motor control, generator, boiler and pneumatic
blueprint is given. The techniques to troubleshoot and rectify electrical and general
control related faults are also treated.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course, the participants should be able to:
1. Identify electrical symbols as used in electrical working drawings
2. Discuss the functions of the various electrical blueprint components
3. Identify and interpret lighting and power layout for buildings
4. Interpret the wiring arrangement and working process of AC controls and power
schematics for AC generators and electric motors.
5. Troubleshoot and rectify electrical faults using schematic drawings.

MECHANICAL DRIVES MAINTENANCE

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course deals with the study of nature, operations, maintenance and lubrication of
mechanical drives components such as shafts, couplings, v-belt, chains & gear drives
commonly used in the Industry. The mechanical Drive components are explained in terms
of their design and construction, materials and their applications. It also includes
discussion on mechanical drive components installation and maintenance procedures. The
course will include hands-on practicals, which consists mainly of testing, dismantling,
assembly, alignment and installation.

 Couplings: Common types, Application, Design and Construction, Installation.
 V-Belt drives: Common types, Pulleys, Design and Construction, Installation.

PUMPS AND COMPRESSORS

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This subject deals with the study and principles, operation and maintenance of pumps and
compressors: basic fluid principles, principles of hydraulics, centrifugal pumps as well as
their parts auxiliary devices. It also deals with the study of compressed air fundamentals,
compressor accessories. Workshop practice consists mainly of disassembling and
assembling of machines mentioned above.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:
1. Explain the principles and basic concepts of hydraulics;
2. Acquire adequate theoretical and practical experience in the construction of pumps;
3. Troubleshooting and maintenance of different types of pumps;

BEARING MAINTENANCE AND LUBRICATION

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course deals with the study of the nature, operations, maintenance and lubrication of
bearings used in the Industry. Bearings are explained in terms of their design,
construction, materials and their applications. It also includes discussion on bearings
installation and maintenance procedures. Workshop practice consists mainly of testing,
dismantling, assembly and installation.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:
1. Discuss the basic principles, design and construction of Bearings used in the
Industries.
2. Explain the importance and functions of Bearings.

REFRIGERATION & AIR-CONDITIONING

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course deals with the study of the principles and functions of refrigeration, air-
conditioning, refrigerants and their properties, components of vapor compression of
refrigeration, electrical components and control of refrigeration and air-conditioning units.
Workshop practice provides practical experience in servicing and maintenance of
refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment.

At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:
1. Discuss the principles of refrigeration process;
2. Select and use proper hand tools and test instruments for troubleshooting different

BOILER MAINTENANCE

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The boiler has to operate so efficiently as to conserve energy. Proper operation of the
boiler depends on such factors as clean heat transfer surfaces, adequate water treatment
and good maintenance practices. This course is therefore designed to introduce or
broaden the knowledge and skills of technicians in basic principles and concepts that
govern the maintenance of industrial boilers.
