Introduction
Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was born on 15th October 1931 in Tamil Nadu. His
personal life was full of struggles and hard work. He belongs to the family of
fisherman and according to their biography, they used to sell newspapers to
support their studies.He was graduated from St. Joseph’s College in 1957 and
was specialised in Aeronautical Engineering.After completing the aeronautical
engineering, Kalam spent next 4 decades as Scientist and worked mainly for
DRDO and ISRO.
He was the only President to work for ISRO and DRDO and was the significant
contributor as he developed India’s first launch vehicle (SLV-3) and because
of this launch, India became an exclusive member of Space Club.
Abdul Kalam was honoured with Bharat Ratna.He was intimately involved in
India’s civilian space program and military missile development efforts because
of the contribution in the development of missile and launch vehicle technology,
he was then referred as the ”Missile Man of India”. He also played important
role in the India’s nuclear test in 1998.
He believed that to resolve society’s problem, technology plays very crucial
role and in his Book ”INDIA 2020”, he strongly advocates an action to de-
velop India into the superpower and developed nation by 2020. At the time,
he retired from the Presidency, he was known as ”People President”.
Kalam has written many Several inspirational books (like Wings of Wire, India
2020). Abdul Kalam believed that youth of the country plays a very important
role in the development of the country and because of this believe, he used to
visit many Institutes to motivate the youth and help them by giving the advice
for their future.
After leaving the post of the presidency, Dr.Kalam became a visiting profes-
sor at IIM(Shillong), IIM(Ahmedabad), and IIM (Indore) and was chancellor
at Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (Thiruvananthapuram).
On May 2012, he launched the movement against corruption with the help of
youth of India and named it ”WHAT CAN I GIVE MOVEMENT”. On 27th
July 2015, while giving the lecture on ”Creating a Livable Planet Earth” at
IIM(Shillong). He collapsed on the stage and was rushed to nearby Hospital
and was declared dead on 7:45 pm of a sudden cardiac arrest.

Five Broad Personality Traits
According to the Psychologists, there are basically five basic dimensions of
Personality traits which help to describe the personality of the Individual.
It is important that each personality factor should have ranged between two
extremes So that personality of the individual should be different from one
another. The Five personality traits are listed below-

Openness to experience This dimension of personality features character-


istics such as imagination, insight, intellectual curiosity, etc. and those
high in this trait have the broad range of interests(like more adventur-
ous and creative).People low in this trait are more traditional and may
struggle with abstract thinking.

Conscientiousness It is the personality trait of being careful or vigilant. It


basically features the high level of thoughtfulness with good impulse and
goal-directed behavior. The people who have high conscientiousness tend
to be organized and mindful of details.

Extraversion It is characterized by sociability, talkativeness, assertiveness


and high amount of emotional expressiveness.It indicates how outgoing
and the social person is. People who are high in this trait is like being
the life of the party(participate in social gatherings, full of energy, etc)
and those who are low feel more comfortable working by himself and are
less outgoing.

Agreeableness This personality includes attributes such as trust, kindness,


affection, etc.People who are high in this trait are usually warm, friendly
and tactful and are more cooperative than those who are low in this trait.
People who are low in this trait are competitive and even manipulative.

Neuroticism It is a trait characterized by sadness, moodiness and emotion-


ally stable. It basically indicates to a person’s ability to keep calm or
even keen when faced with pressure or stress. Those who are low in this
trait tend to be more stable and emotionally resilient.

Correlation
APJ Abdul Kalam was multi-faceted personality.He was a prolific poet, sen-
sitive human, a patriot but was also a humble man with a childlike curiosity.
Dr Kalam always enjoys meeting new people and the people who meet Kalam
says that they are full of energy, the lectures they delivered were knowledge-
able and they are able to make new friends where ever they go. He likes to
take morning walk forgetting he is the head of a state. Dr Kalam used to care
about its college and feel empathy and were concern for other people for eg-
a scientist who got transferred were not able to concentrate on the work and
Dr Kalam went to him asked the reason and was told that is in the hospital
and could not get through for 3-4 days because the phone call was not able to
connect. So, Kalam told the operator to connect it to Mumbai and talked to
scientist’s son and wife and because of this scientist burst in tears when told
feel free to tell me if anything is wrong. Dr Kalam always follows the strict
discipline due to which he used to finish the important tasks right away and
pays attention to small details. Dr Kalam was a very relaxed person and was
able to deal easily with stress but he easily gets upset when he heard about
other problem and used to feel anxious at the time of new project but were
able to overcome any emotional stress.
Dr Kalam used to be creative and adventurous and because of this, he was
able to bring the blue revolution by integrated guided missile development
program and also helped in the development of launch vehicles which helps
to carry satellites into space. He was often open to trying new things and
was always focused on tackling new challenges and was always thinking about
abstract concepts. He always that upcoming generation of India can change
the nation.He always used to have interactive sessions with the students and
in spite of being President, he never disturbed the staff of Raj Bhawan, as he
was always very polite nad always speak very slowly and softly
From the above, we can conclude that Dr Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul
Kalam was one of the many personalities who almost score well in all the Big
Five Dimensions of Personality, which helps to determine the Personality of
the person It is said by Psychologists that the one who falls under each of the
personality dimension has a unique personality and can not only bring great
change but also helps other by leading them to new change. Anonymous has
said that IF YOU CHANGE NOTHING, NOTHING WILL CHANGE. So,
we can say that Dr Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam bought the change
that helped the whole nation to move in the direction that will make India,
the considerable country.
