Problem 1
Question: A rigid tank is divided into two rooms by a
membrane, both containing water, shown in the figure.
Room A is at 200 kPa, v = 0.5 m3/kg, VA = 1 m3, and room
B contains 3.5 kg at 0.5 MPa, 400°C. The membrane now
ruptures and heat transfer takes place so the water
comes to a uniform state at 100°C. Find the heat transfer
during the process.
2
Problem 1
Solution:
VA1 = 1m3 , PA1=200 kPa, vA1 =0.5m3/kg
mB1 = 3.5kg , PB1= 0.5 MPa = 500 kPa, TB1 = 400 oC
m2 = mA1 + mB1
From the first law of thermodynamics:
m2u2 - mA1uA1 - mB1uB1 = 1Q2 - 1W2

Problem 1
State 1A: (P, v) PA1=200 kPa, vA1 =0.5m3/kg
From Table B.1.2, for P=200 kPa → vf=0.001061 m3/kg, vg=0.88573 m3/kg, vfg= 0.88467 m3/kg
For P=200 kPa: uf= 504.47 kJ/kg , ug=2529.49 kJ/kg, ufg= 2025.02 kJ/kg
4
Problem 1
State 1B: (P, T) PB1= 0.5 MPa = 500 kPa, TB1 = 400 oC
From Table B.1.2, for P=0.5 MPa = 500kPa kPa → Tsat = 151.86 oC
From superheated table (Table B.1.3), for P= 500kPa and TB1 = 400 oC
5
Problem 1
State 2:( T2, v2 ) T2 = 100 oC, v2 = 0.5746 m3/kg
vf< v2 <vg
x2 = (v2-vf )/ vfg
for T= 100 oC: uf= 418.91 kJ/kg , ug=2506.50 kJ/kg, ufg= 2087.58 kJ/kg
u2 =uf + x2*ufg
6
Problem 1
From the first law of thermodynamics:
m2u2 - mA1uA1 - mB1uB1 = 1Q2 - 1W2
Since 1W2 = 0
1Q2 = m2u2 - mA1uA1 - mB1uB1
1Q2 = -7421 kJ

Problem 2
Question: An insulated cylinder is divided into two parts
of 1 m3 each by an initially locked piston, as shown in the
figure. Side A has air at 200 kPa, 300 K, and side B has air
at 1.0 MPa, 1000 K. The piston is now unlocked so it is
free to move, and it conducts heat so the air comes to a
uniform temperature TA = TB. Find the mass in both A and
B, and the final T and P.

Problem 2
Solution: VA1 = 1m3 , PA1=200 kPa, TA1 =300 K
VB1 = 1m3 , PB1= 1.0 Mpa = 1000 kPa, TB1 = 1000 K
