AE231 Thermodynamics

Answer for Quiz 2 (October 13, 2014)

Question: Find the phase (compressed liquid, saturated liquid-vapor mixture or superheated
vapor) and quality x if applicable

a) H2O, T = 220°C, v = 0.5 m3/kg

b) H2O, T = 270°C, v = 0.0005 m3/kg

c) H2O, T = 300°C, v = 0.01 m3/kg

Answer: Quality has meaning only if we have saturated liquid and vapor mixture.

a) From the table, the saturated vapor specific volume for H2O, at T = 220°C can be read as
vg = 0.96819 m3/kg.

Hence v > vg and we have superheated vapor.

b) From the table, the saturated liquid specific volume for H2O, at T = 270°C can be read as
vf = 0.001302 m3/kg.

Hence v < vf and we have compressed liquid.

c) From the table, the saturated liquid and vapor specific volumes for H2O, at T = 300°C
can be read as vf = 0.001404 m3/kg and vg = 0.02167 m3/kg

vf <v < vg

v − vf 0.01 − 0.001404 0.008596

x= = = = 0.424
vg − v f 0.02167 − 0.001404 0.020266
