Laboratory : Energy Audit

Objectives:

1) To understand the purpose of energy audit and how energy audit can influence
towards energy conservation.
2) To understand the structures or parameters that is required for a detailed
energy audit.
3) To submit a detailed energy audit on a case study on a building.

Introduction:

An energy audit is a periodic inspection of energy conservation in a building, process

or system so as to reduce the amount of energy input into the system without
negatively affecting the output. The purpose of energy audit is it helps us to make a
better recommendation using factual data.

Although there are many variations, energy audit can broadly be classified as
• phase I – preliminary audit
• phase II - standard / target audit
• phase III - detail / comprehensive audit

Each energy audit types are distinguished by the level of detail involved and the depth
of the analysis undertaken. It is clear that a considerable amount of useful information
can be obtained from a preliminary energy audit. However, without further
investigation it is not possible to determine where in the office building the energy is
being consumed. The analysis technique used for detailed audit is essentially much
the same as those used for preliminary audit but the level of detail is much greater.
Comprehensive audits require detailed energy surveys to be undertaken and they often
require the installation of additionally sub-metering in order to determine accurately
component energy flows.

Part 1

Student will form in a group of 3 and will perform a detailed energy audit on a case
study on a building. Students need to identify those issues which need immediate direct
action as well as those which required further detailed investigation. Students need to
propose a solution to improve the energy efficiency of the building through detail
analysis and calculation. A written audit report will be submitted and the following
parameters are required.
