NARRATIVE REPORT IN VLPSNHS GULAYAN SA

PAARALAN PROGRAM (GPP) IMPLEMENTATION

The Department of Education (DepEd) implements the school base Gulayan sa

Paaralan Program (GPP) which aims to benefit nearly two million malnourished and
underfed school children.

Vicente L. Pimentel Sr. National High School (VLPSNHS) actively supports this
program. Teachers, students as well as stakeholders help in setting and planting green
leafy and fruit bearing vegetables.

This program aims to encourage students as well as the families of the beneficiaries
to have their nutritional improvement to be maintained at home for healthy lifestyle.

The students as well as the parents were able to know how to make use of organic
fertilizers and may use it at home.

Preparation. May 15, 2017. VLPSNHS has prepared the garden area during the
Brigada Eskwela. Preparation includes plowing the garden area, and plucking grass.

Implementation. June 5, 2017. The implementation of GPP for the school year
2017-2018 has started during the onset of the school year. Students were led and
assisted by GPP Coordinator Mr. Tiburcio U. Mahinay in uprooting, seeding, transplanting
and planting vegetables in the garden. Among the vegetables planted were: pechay,
swamp cabbage (kangkong), malabar spinach (alugbati), lady finger (okra), horse raddish
(malunggay) camote tops, eggplant, lemon grass, tomatoes and onion leaf.

The school has also planted corn, cassava and sweet potato.

Maintenance. Students. Students maintain the gulayan every Friday during their TLE
time and also during ground improvement. Maintenance like plucking of grass and
applying of organic fertilizers (burned rice husks) and pesticides also took place.

Brigada Eskwela Plus. October 28, 2017. Active parents of VLPSNHS have
participated during the Brigada Eskwela Plus to maintain the Gulayan sa Paaralan
Program (GPP). The activity was led by the active and very supportive school GPTA
President Mr. Oscar T. Caduyac. It was also participated by the parents of different
grade levels with their respective advisers; Mrs. Maylyn J. Dua and Mrs. Ma. Lisa
Espinoza of grade 7, Ms. Nickle Jay Suarez and Mrs, Genelyn M. Rubi for grade 8 level,

Mrs. Narlyn Adane of grade 9 , Mr. Tiburcio U. Mahinay and Ms. Arlene B. Dua of grade
10 level. The parents were still there despite the hot weather to make the activity
successful.

Harvesting. The harvests of the gulayan of VLPSNHS were distributed to the students
while the others were sold to teachers. Mr. Tiburcio U. Mahinay keeps the vegetable
distribution list as record of the vegetables harvested. The sale of the harvest is also
kept to aide school feeding program.

Feeding Program. VLPSNHS conducts feeding program to fight malnutrition.

Vegetables and other ingredients were taken from the school’s gulayan. The first
feeding program was on the nutrition month celebration on October, 2017 The second
was on the second week of November 2017.

Community Garden. The community garden is located at Purok Pag-ibig, Barangay

Quezon, Tandag City. Mrs. Aquilina B. Dua is the care taker of the said garden. Among
the vegetables planted in the garden are: eggplant, camote tops (talbos) and malabar
spinach (alugbati).

VLPSNHS believes that sustainability of the GPP implementation deems to fight and
end malnutrition and promote an organic way of living.
