WOLF STORY

-> {{a man in a winter forest relates how he is and is not tracking a wolf, and the entire thing is a
sort of meditation on how the hardest thing to find is an idea, an idea is much harder to find
than a wolf, the hunt for ideas presented with the quality of hallucination, and how the whole
thing takes place above an abyss, bottomless and far from logical, and the way the man speaks
has a kind of self-correcting shuffle, as if something were genuinely being worked out, and yet,
painfully and humorously, these corrections never result in the correct answer}}}

this wolf...a terrifying puzzle..... looking for the wolf, as i most furiously did that evening, all but
torturing myself in the effort to find it and failing, because the wolf-puzzle seemed ever more
complex...

see i dont have a gun and of course __________, but yes, you wish i was following a wolf, for
then you might see some action, some violence, see something die, dying, but dont you see that
this is in fact what you see already, it's not necessary to see a violent death to see a death, and
not necessary to see violence to see a creature being hunted, i am dying and in fact hunting
myself tracking myself right now.../ i am certainly on the trail of something, though its not a wolf,
but fine, lets imagine for a bit that i am hunting a wolf, even if no behaviours or movements you
see in me would have anything to do with that, for instance do you see me lying on the lying on
the ground, smelling the trunks of trees, do you think i dont know how to track a wolf and if i
was wouldnt i be doing those things, and i dont want you to imagine the wolf in lieu of other
things you should be imagining me doing, what i am clearly or to you i suppose not so clearly
doing, to be honest i wish i was following/hunting a wolf, it would be easier, but yes right now let
it be a wolf i am hunting,

the moon on high resembled a wound, as the wolf should be wounded, but instead the lovely
body of the night was wounded, as a beautiful noble soul can be bruised and wounded. yes im
going to have to sleep i do not want to for i have not yet found... the wolf... i would rather keep
up the hunt... but i cannot ....i must bed down.

a proud beast ...

to be honest id take anything whatever i can find ill take it a rabbit or squireel even even though
again im not even hunting an animal but the ice is ___ and the idea of hunting a wolf pleases me
i think ... a wolf, the last wolf, the final wolf, do wolves even live here, ive heard the final wolf
that lived here was killed years ago ...

savage traps ...

dont think ive forgotten where they are ... dont think i will step into any myself ... has it
happened? __ yes, once ...

we are surrounded by creatures that move on the threshold of language but do not reach us ...
hence my dilema... one might even say that we ourselves do not reach us and so we must move,
to bring ourselves to language...
ancient ways ... deadfall traps and snares ... observed the direction of the wind ... big canine ...
Wolves can be patterned like other game. Scouting will help you find travel routes, crossings, etc.
Wolves tend to take the easy paths: roads, trails and frozen lakes. NOTE: Many Canadian
outfitters routinely call or bait wolves onto open ice for increased visibility on reclusive
wolves. ... Howling works to locate wolves. But too much howling, especially by inexperienced
callers, can educate wolves. Elk calf and fawn-in-distress and coyote calls work well. Also try
moose calls. In Great Lakes regions whitetail-in-distress calls imitate a main prey species in
peril. ...When calling, set-up on high ground, not in a hole or depression. Visibility is a key.
Consider using a blind. Wolves seem to spot blaze orange from a great distance. NOTE: A
treestand also increases your ability to see, plus it can disperse your scent higher to eliminate a
wolf smelling you. .. Wolves are more reckless in their pursuit of prey when it's colder outside.
Hunters should concentrate on bad weather days for wolf hunting. ....Wolves are tough to find. A
lot of stamina and patience is involved in hunting wolves. Another difficult aspect of hunting
wolves stems from the fact that wolves do a lot of their own hunting at night ... Calls that work
can range from a squeaker that imitates a field mouse to a cow elk call. Perhaps the most
popular, and arguably most effective are the calls made to imitate the death squalls of a
cottontail or jack rabbit. While a rabbit might not seem like much of a meal for a wolf, it’s still an
enticing, easy snack. ... fierce territorial behaviour ... the shoulder hours ...

i believe i stand on the threshold of some decisive perception...

having to choose between the cloak of invisibility or the magical foot, feather, or claw that could
metamorphose me into an animal. sudden disappearances, monstrous transformations,
anything seemed possible: snake pits opened up and were transformed into rivers of milk, kings
who had been thought kindly turned out to be brutal parents, silent, bewitched kingdoms
suddenly came back to life. the lost rules which govern the world of folklore were tumbling out
of the magic box. folktales are real. Taken all together, they ofter, in their oft-repeated and
constantly varying examinations of human vicissitudes, a general explanation of life preserved in
the slow ripening of rustic consciences; these folk stories are the catalog of the potential
destinies of men and women
