TEST – 1

Time:1.5 Hrs Max. Marks: 50

1a The temperature Scale of a certain thermometer is given by the relation t = a ln (x) + b, 6 CO1 L3
where a and b are constants and ‘x’ is the thermometric property of the fluid in the
thermometer. If at the Ice and Steam point the thermometric property are found to be
1.5 and 7.5 respectively, Determine the temperature corresponding to the thermometric
property 4.5 on a Celsius scale
1b Distinguish between following: 4 CO1 L4
i) Open system and closed system ii) Microscopic and Macroscopic approach iii)Intensive and
Extensive properties iv) Diathermic wall and adiabatic wall
2a A fluid undergoes the following processes in a sequence to complete a cycle: i) Heated 6 CO1 L3
reversibly at constant pressure of 1 bar until it has volume of 0.03 m3. ii) It is then
compressed reversibly according to the law PV=C, to a pressure of 4.2 bar. iii) It is
then allowed to expand reversibly according to law PV1.3=C. iv) Finally it is heated at
constant volume back to initial conditions. If the work done during the constant
pressure process is 515 N-m, calculate the net work done on or by the cycle. Sketch
also the PV diagram
2b Justify that work and heat are path function 4 CO1 L6

3 In a closed system the work and heat transfer per unit temperature rise is given by the 10 CO2 L3
relations
δW/ dT =(4.4 - 0.084T) KJ/K, δQ/ dT =1.05 KJ/K. Estimate the change in internal
energy when the temperature during the process raises from 200˚C to 400˚C
4 Obtain the expressions of work done for a closed system undergoing change of state by 10 CO2 L3
following process. a) Isobaric process b) Isothermal Process c) Polytropic process

5 Derive the steady flow Energy equation for a open system and deduce the work done 10 CO2 L3
expression in case of following devices a) Compressor b) Centrifugal pump stating the
assumptions
