Module 1

1. Explain static and dynamic balancing.

5. Four masses A, B, C and D are completely balanced. Masses C and D make angles of 90° and
195° respectively with that of mass B in the counter clockwise direction. The rotating masses
have following properties.
MB = 25 Kg; MC = 40 kg; MD = 35 kg
rA = 150 mm, rB = 200 mm, rC = 100 mm, rD = 180 mm
Planes B and C are 250 mm apart. Determine
(i) Mass A and its angular position with that of mass B;
(ii) Positions of all the planes relative to plane of mass A.

6. A disturbing mass of 600 kg is attached to a shaft. The shaft is rotating at a uniform velocity
of ω rad/sec. The distance of centre of gravity of the disturbing mass from the axis of rotation
is 270 mm. The disturbing mass is to be balanced by two masses in two different planes. The
distances of the centre of gravity of the balancing mass from the axis of rotation is 450 mm
each. The distance between the two planes of the balancing masses is 300 mm. Determine :
(i) The distance between plane of disturbing mass and the planes of balancing masses.
(ii) The magnitude of balancing masses when
(a) The planes of balancing masses are on the same side of the plane of disturbing
mass.
(b) The planes of balancing masses are on either side of the plane of disturbing mass.

Module 2

1. Derive the expression for natural frequency of a system subjected to free vibration by
Newton’s method.
2. What do you mean by transmissibility? Explain.
3. Find an expression for logarithmic decrement in terms of damping factor.
4. A gun barrel having mass 600 kg is designed with the following data:
Initial recoil velocity 40 m/s ; Recoil distance on firing 2.0 m. Calculate:
(a) Spring constant,
(b) Damping coefficient, and
(c) Time required for the barrel to return to a position 0.12 m from its initial position.
5. Derive an expression for amplitude of vibrations in forced – damped vibration system.
Module 3

1. Write a note on “Torsionally equivalent shaft”.


2. Explain Dunkerly’s method.
3. The moment of inertia of 3 rotors A, B and C are respectively 0.3, 0.6 and 0.8 kg-m2, the
distance between A and B is 1.5 m and B and C is 1 m, the shaft is 70 mm in diameter and
modulus of rigidity for the shaft material is 84 × 109 N/m2. Find :
(a) Frequencies of torsional vibrations.
(b) Position of nodes.
(c) Amplitude of vibrations.

4. A 1.2 m long shaft has a diameter of 45mm for half the length and 60mm for the remaining
length. One end of the shaft is fixed and the other carries a rotor of 200kg mass with a radius
of gyration of 45mm. Find the frequency of the torsional vibration neglecting the inertia of
the shaft. Take G = 84 GN/m2.

5. Calculate the natural frequency of a shaft of diameter 12 cm and length 350 cm carrying two
discs of diameter 130 cm and 225 cm respectively at its ends and weighs 500 kg and 950 kg
respectively. The modulus of rigidity of the shaft is 2 × 106 kgf/cm2.

Module 4

4. A spring mass system is shown in figure. If the system is initially relaxed and a step function
excitation is applied to the mass, find the response of the system.

(a) Step wave form.
(b) Impulsive. Derive the equations of motion.

3. Write the working principle of microphone and loud speaker.
4. Explain the working of sound level meter with a neat sketch.
5. Write short notes on :
(a) Air columns.
(b) Doppler effects and its applications.
(c) Acoustic impedance filters.
6. Discuss the methods, equipments and criteria for recording and reproduction of sound.
