1. Introduction
1.1 History of automobile sector

The history of the automobile begins as early as 1769, with the creation of
steam powered automobiles capable of human transport .In 1806, the first cars
powered by internal combustion engines running on fuel gas appeared, which led
to the introduction in 1885 of the ubiquitous modern gasoline- or petrol-fueled
internal combustion engine. Cars powered by electricity briefly appeared at the
turn of the 20th century but largely disappeared from commonality until the turn of
the 21st century, when interest in low- and zero-emissions transportation was
reignited. As such, the early history of the automobile can be divided into a
number of eras based on the prevalent method of automotive propulsion during
that time. Later periods were defined by trends in exterior styling and size and
utility preferences.

1.2Founder of Mahindra & Mahindra

Mr. Anand G. Mahindra, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Mahindra &
Mahindra Ltd. – the flagship company of the US $6.3 billion Mahindra Group,
which is among the top 10 industrial houses in India - graduated from Harvard
College, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Magna cum Laude. In 1981 he secured an MBA
degree from the Harvard Business School, Boston, Massachusetts. He returned to
India that year and joined Mahindra Ugine Steel Company Ltd (MUSCO), the
country’s foremost producer of specialty steels, as Executive Assistant to the Finance
Director. In 1989 he was appointed President and Deputy Managing Director of the
company.

During his stint at MUSCO, he initiated the Mahindra Group’s diversification into
the new business areas of real estate development and hospitality management.

In the summer of 1991, he was appointed Deputy Managing Director of Mahindra &
Mahindra Ltd., the country’s dominant producer of off-road vehicles and agricultural
tractors. He has since been engaged in a comprehensive change programme in
Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. to make the company an efficient and aggressive
competitor in the new liberalized economic environment in India.

In April 1997, he was appointed Managing Director of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd
and in January 2003 given the additional responsibility of Vice Chairman.

Mr. Mahindra was a co-promoter of Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd., which in 2003
was converted into a bank. Kotak Mahindra Bank is one of the foremost private
sector banks today.

Mr. Mahindra frequently shares his views and ideas on Indian economy and business
through his writings in some of India’s leading business magazines.

1.3.1 History of Mahindra & Mahindra

Swift action followed thought. The Mahindra brothers joined hands with a
distinguished gentleman called Ghulam Mohammed. And, on October 2nd, 1945,
Mahindra & Mohammed was set up as a franchise for assembling jeeps from Willys,
USA.
Since then, Mahindra & Mahindra has grown steadily in size and stature and evolved
into a Group that occupies a premier position in almost all key sectors of the
economy. The Group's history is studded with milestones. Each one taking the
Group forward. In fact, today, its total turnover is about 7.1 billion dollars.
Mahindra is a group in a hurry, engaged in an ambitious, sustained and prolonged
penetration into the global arena. Its spirit can be encapsulated in the words of the
poet Robert Frost, a favourite of India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal
Nehru:

"The woods are lovely, dark and deep,

But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep."

For Mahindra & Mahindra, this translates into many more milestones to be set up
before it rests. If ever.

clearances, efficient state machinery and skilled work force. Uttaranchal is a young
but fast-growing state with a progressive Chief Minister and a forward thinking
bureaucracy. This plant and our tractor operations in Rudrapur will add momentum
to the industrial growth of the state. Finally, the plant is in line with our efforts to
continuously update our capacities to fuel Mahindra growth.”
Dr. Pawan Goenka, President, AS & Member of the Group Mgt. Board, said:
“M&M has a very large presence in the north and north-western regions of the
country. It, therefore, makes good business sense to set up a plant at Haridwar. We
are looking at producing 50,000 units per
year once the plant reaches full capacity
to cater to the demand from the region.
We would also develop a strong vendor
base around the plant in Haridwar.”
Mahindra & Mahindra has comprehensive manufacturing facilities with high
level of vertical integration. Catering to the Sector's diverse customer base spanning
rural and semi urban customers, defence requirements and luxurious urban utility
vehicles or SUVs. These manufacturing plants keep abreast with the latest
technology to meet the growing market expectations.
These manufacturing facilities have some of the best technologies and equipment
in India and provide for a very challenging and satisfying work environment. Its
plants in Mumbai and Nasik manufacture multi-utility vehicles and engines are
produced at the Igatpuri plant. Utility Vehicles, Light commercial vehicles and 3
wheelers are manufactured at the Zaheerabad plant in Andhra Pradesh and three-
wheelers at the Haridwart.
5. Vehicles offered at M&M
M&M Haridwar, basically deals with assembling vehicles, making them available at
various agencies for on road uses. Vehicles getting assembled at the plant are

6. Assembly of vehicles

M&M plants employs the assembly line method for assembling the vehicle.
In the procedure plant had four different type of assembling lines, where the
requisite work is done by the work force with the help of all required machinery and
guidance.
The procedure can be understood by the following drawing, which makes clear that
work going on in two different lines is gathered later on and finally the vehicles are
delivered after proper inspection.

6.1 Trim line

As the name indicate, this line is associated is associated with trimming of vehicles.
Trimming line is divided in 17 different slots for performing different tasks.
The body brought from Nasik plant is first taken to paint booth, and then brought to
trimming line. The work done in different slots is as follows:-
1. Trim line, is meant for, checking hardness of body, assembling different
internal parts, back door, lamps inside the vehicle including roof lamp etc.
2. Trim line is meant for putting ragsine, mats fixing inside metal walls for
proper tightening.
3. Trim line to 9. Trim line, suspended pedals, brake and cluthes and
accelerators (ABC), doors, clamp, tail light, mats, air ventilation, floor and
door beading, stitching ragzine, water recovery tank, evaporators etc were
placed in the vehicle body.
10. trim line is meant to check pressure in tyres, oil grade etc
11. trim line to 13. Trim line are the slots where inspection of all the previously
done things is done once again.
Though everything is done carefully with inspection at every step but these slots
again deals with careful inspection.
14. Trim line, is meant for applying glasses, windshields etc.
15. Trim line and 16. Timeline are meant to set up wipers, setting wipers and
nozzles etc.
17. Trim line is the slot where employ again undertake a final inspection to shift
it to the invasion line.
This way the procedure regarding assembling if body is done.
Following picture gives a idea of trimming line

6.2 Chassis line

Chassis line is also linked to the outer door where chassis are brought on
different slots and various functions are performed. Chassis line is also divided
into four slots.
Different slots are for different tasks such as:-
1. Chassis line is meant to assemble the axel, leaf springs etc.
2. Chassis line is slot where internal fueling system is assembled, according to
the requirement of vehicle. For eg. It is placed at lower arm in DI Scorpio
version whereas in other version it is placed at the upper arm.
3. Chassis line and 4. Chassis line where the slots where fuel tank is assembled.
The chassis after assembling all these parts are finally moved to the invasion
line for further working. Chassis line has less worker and slots in comparison
to trim line but more automatic devices for checking and performing task at
each stage. The workers working in chassis line are quite more experienced
than that of trim line.

6.3 Invasion line

After completion of assembly in chassis line, the chassis of vehicles are
brought to invasion line with the help of some automatic carrying hook trolly.
Invasion line, is so named as at this place the chassis which were worked
upside down in chassis line are again turned up side up and down side down
with the help of a 16 bolt tight body. Invasion line is also separated in slots
but these slots are not numbered as the other lines slots.
In invasion line various parts like, exhaust chamber, muffler, expansion, rare
bumper, stirring column, stirring tightening, extra lamps, radiators, knobs, air
cleaner, wheel accelerators, power stirring oil, back tyre, etc are assembled.
The turning of chassis is carried out carefully and seems quite dangerous, but
it is not so. With the help of 16 bolts, the chassis are tighten on a iron body
and rest of turning is performed by the automatic machine.
Here machines for checking the brakes and clutches are also present, which
directly take reading of the brake and clutches efficiencies, so it is more
dependent and improved and accurate.
Above figure shows that how the body is carried from one slot to other and
one line to other.

6.4 Assembly line

Assembly line is last but not the least for completion of assembly of a
vehicle. In assembly line the number of slots is very few. This line mainly
deals with the inspection of vehicle, as this is the last stage of assembling.
In assembly line, diesel fuel machine, coolant filling machine etc. are checked
and inspected properly. After checking this wheel alignment etc are again
done. And a last inspection is done. After this the assembled vehicle is taken
for the test drive.
And finally after the test drive, vehicle is ready!

7. Development of Scorpio
Prior to the mid-nineties, Mahindra & Mahindra was an automobile assembly
company. The company manufactured Willys Jeeps and its minor modified versions
(modifications carried out in India). In 1996, the company planned to enter the SUV
segment with a new product which could compete globally. Since M & M didn't
have the technical know-how to make a new age product, they devised a whole new
concept among Indian auto companies. Roping in new executives such as Dr.
Pawan Goenka and Alan Durante who had worked in the auto industry in western
countries, the company broke the rule that says automakers must design, engineer
and test their own vehicles (spending millions of dollars in the process). The new
Mahindra Scorpio SUV had all of its major systems designed directly by suppliers
with the only input from Mahindra being design, performance specifications and
program cost. Design and engineering of systems was done by suppliers, as was
testing, validation and materials selection. Sourcing and engineering locations were
also chosen by suppliers. The parts were later assembled in a Mahindra plant under
the Mahindra Badge (as Mahindra is a well known brand in India in the MUV
segment). Using this method the company was able to build a from scratch a new
vehicle with virtually 100 percent supplier involvement from concept to reality for
$120 million, including improvements to the plant. The project took 5 years to move
from concept to final product.
In April 2006, the company launched an upgraded Scorpio – dubbing it the 'All-
New' Scorpio. In June 2007, Mahindra launched a pick-up version in India known
as the Scorpio Getaway.Recently, M & M has launched a face lifted version of the
model.
