‘Safety Measures during

Construction’
Presented by Muhammad Bilal
CED,Uet Peshawar
How it should be
• The workers/labor's should must be wearing all the personal
protective Equipment which includes hat, boots, gloves and
high visibility clothing.
• The contractors must provide medical facilities at the
construction site
• The provision of training and information to workers and
inspection activities are important tools to promote a safety
and health culture
How it is (The Problem)
• In Pakistan, there is a significant difference between large and
small contractors. Most large firms do have a safety policy, on
paper, but employees in general are not aware of its existence.
• No orientation for new staff or workers is conducted, hazards
are not pointed out, and no safety meetings are held
• But on the other side a number of major constructors exhibit a
concern for safety and have established various safety
procedures. They also provide training for workers and
maintain safety on the jobsite
Unsafe conditions exist on many sites,
both large and small, and laborers are
subjected to numerous hazards
‘Employees are required to learn from
their own mistakes or experience’
• Concreting is done mainly by laborers,
and cements burns due to the
unavailability of protective gloves and
boots are common
• Workers fall from heights due to weak
scaffolding and the unavailability of
safety belts.
• Workers sustain injuries on the head,
fingers, eyes, feet, and face due to
absence of personal protection
equipment.
Group Site visit
We asked Mr. Imtiyaz alam (consultant)
who was supervising the area, about the
local Problems which the workers are
facing in BRT his answer was ‘Some of the
workers have personal protective
equipments while some don’t have it, if a
worker get injured we can only provide
first aid if the injury is critical then we
have to move him to hospital’
He also concluded that ‘In any mega
engineering project 5-10% of the total
budget is for safety purposes but
unfortunately here most of it is consumed
by the ones who don’t deserve it, he
further concluded that the only solution is
PEC should implement certain laws for
Safety measures’
The highest injury rates in the construction industry is ironwork
When we were talking to
the safety team, a worker
arrived at the camp who
got himself injured
because he was not
wearing gloves he was
treated by a safety team
member. First aid box
was available at the site
The solution
“There should be a Proper Legislation regarding safety
procedures at construction sites which should must be applied
throughout the world, it is not possible without the
cooperation of governments. Prevention involves participation
from governments and workers’ and employers’
organizations”
