HOTS Analysing DIFFERENTIATION STRATEGIES Task

 Write the titles of the two reading texts with the words in the wrong order on the board.
Ask pupils to sequence the words in the two titles in the correct order.
Pre  Explain that these titles will be the focus of the Reading lesson. Ask pupils to explain why
the titles use the passive (focus on what happens rather than who makes it happen) and
how to form the present simple passive.

 Distrubute Worksheet 1 & 2 to pupils. One half of the pupils will get the ‘How paper is
ACTIVITIES

recycled’ worksheet and another half will get the ‘How glass is recycled’ worksheet.
 Task 1: Pupils will match the descriptions with the correct pictures for both processes.
While
Quickly check the answers with each group.
Elicit briefly from each half of the class which clues helped them with their answers.
 Task 2: In pairs (from different half), explain the prosess of how paper and glass are
recycled to each other.

Post
 Pupils complete the Emoji Exit Slip regarding the lesson.

The glass is sorted by colour and washed to remove
any impurities.
Glass does not degrade through the recycling process,
so it can be recycled again and again.
Glass is taken from the bin and taken to a glass
treatment plant.

The glass is then sent back to the shops ready to be
used again.
The glass is then crushed and melted, then moulded
into new products such as bottles and jars. Or it may
be used for alternative purposes such as brick
manufacture or decorative uses.
Paper is taken from the bin and deposited in a large
recycling container along with paper from other
recycling bins.

How paper is recycled
The slurry is spread using large rollers into large thin
sheets.
By adding different materials to the slurry, different
paper products can be created, such as cardboard,
newsprints or office paper.
The paper is left to dry, and then it is rolled up ready
to be cut and sent back to the shops.

The separated paper is then washed with soapy water
to remove inks, plastic film, staples and glue. The
paper is put into a large holder where it is mixed with
water to create ‘slurry’.
The paper is taken to a recycling plant where it is
separated into types and grades.
Paper is taken from the bin and deposited in a large
recycling container along with paper from other
recycling bins.
